Science Fiction Helps Us Progress
We all couldn't do without our cell phones or our computer. Most of us couldn't even do without our TV's.
All the little things in life that we are taking advantage of, that most of us consider life's necessity came to us from science fiction. I'll explain this in more detail to show you where the idea's actually started. Some of you will be amazed, and some of you will just remember when this took place.
I will start with the laptop or the PC in front of you right now. This couldn't have happened of course without the invention of the computer chip, in Silicon Valley, so named by a journalist in 1971. This chip was so small it allowed companies to reduce the size of a computer from a large building to the small PC in front of you now.
Shortly after the invention of the computer chip, a new television show was aired; the name of it was Star Trek. From the flip up communicator that Captain Kirk used we have the cell phones that we have today, to the push button micro wave in the Mess Hall. The Enterprises' famous computer that even talked, as do some computer programs do now, such as my printer that says, "printing has started", or "out of paper'. These things really make me feel like I am really in the Star Trek TV show, which aired in the mid 1966.
I won't stop with just Star Trek; let's take for example Babylon Five which aired in 1993. The great space station, which was built to make peace throughout the galaxy. The United States, Russia and several other countries in the world are helping to build the first International Space Station.
I want to remind you of the robot on Lost In Space, which was on television from 1965-1968. The robot had many programs that he could calculate the distance, velocity, speed and time it took, or would take to get somewhere. This robot was supposed to be the most sophisticated robot of its time, (our time). Now we have robots that can even think for themselves, and to an extent, reason things out. We even have small robots that will vacuum your floor. There is even a robot nurse, as seen on Sci-Fi channels, "Count Down to Doomsday'.
