No matter how awful you think our government and political system have become, odds are you do not know about this travesty of justice, an incredible failure to honor our fabled Constitution. This failure has removed the sovereignty of we the people, and made Congress much more powerful than it should be. Let me acknowledge that even though I have been pegged as "Democracy's Mr. Fix It," until recently I too was ignorant about this blatant disregard for a key part of our Constitution.

Our Founders were acutely aware of the need to create a mechanism for we the people to, when necessary, circumvent the political power of the federal government. They built in a critically important form of direct democracy that, however, our elected MISrepresentatives have refused to implement. Here it is: Article V of our Constitution specifies two distinct routes to amending our Constitution: "The Congress, whenever two-thirds of both Houses shall deem it necessary, shall propose Amendments to this Constitution, or, on the Application of the Legislatures of two-thirds of the several States, shall call a Convention for proposing Amendments, which, in either Case, shall be valid to all Intents and Purposes, as Part of this Constitution, when ratified by the Legislatures of three-fourths of the several States, or by Conventions in three-fourths thereof, as the one or the other Mode of Ratification may be proposed by the Congress..."

Conventions to consider constitutional amendments should be seen as peaceful revolutions - a remedy specified in our Constitution for addressing a national government and political system that no longer serves public interests. Congress has been so corrupted for so long that it has blatantly ignored the constitutional provision for conventions. It wants exclusive power over amending our Constitution in violation of the Constitution itself.

Congress Has Been Acting Unconstitutionally for Many Years!

Few Americans know that a key Constitution provision has been ignored by Congress, because it wants more power than the Constitution provided.

Takeaways
  • Despite over 500 state requests for a constitutional convention, Congress has not acted like the Constitution demands.
  • The Supreme Court acted unconstitutionally when it refused to make Congress obey the Constitution.
  • Every presidential candidate should take a stand and publicly say that Congress should obey the Constitution.

Great article. Politicians of all stripes need to be pulled down off their lofty pedestals and realize they are working for a country of citizens and not their own selfish interests.

I just came across your article. I too have problems with how our constitution is "adhered to, but I am more focused on the congress and the president and their total lack of consideration for this sacred (though not sacrosanct) document as it relates to war making in general and Iraq in particular. The only issue I had with your article is that you reference Wikipedia as opposed to the actually text of the constitution. I have written briefly abut my concerns in an "Open Letter". It hasn't published yo the site yet, but I would love to know what you and others think. I do by the way love your writing style.

As soon as a majority of the people remember that the birth place of freedom is in rebellion we will be on a start. Then the next thing will be for people to learn that voting for a different party or a different rep is not really a rebellion, it is more a same voice with a different smell of breath. I am sitting quietly waiting for all the "brilliant sons" to begin rutting in to many various constitutional truths such as the one here of which you speak. The monster that created the beast known as the IRS is one that comes immediately and most vividly to mind. An example is that in a California courtroom it has been declared by jury that income tax withholding as it stands is not legal, constitutional or even remotely legitimate...yet, there is no word heard through the trumpet that should be blaring that into every ear from every mouth... Grand scheme of things is pretty spooky...and it'll stay that way until people fuss. No fuss from us they won't represent us. I'm subscribing. Wri

Excellent article. Thank you for bringing this to my attention. I had no idea we even had this power. Thank you, also, for educating me. I will definitely be doing a great deal of research and thinking on this subject.
