Dallas Texas is not usually thought of as a real "neighborhood" city. It is young, for one thing, and people often have an impression of this once oil rich town and the home of Enron, as a flat expanse of gleaming skyscrapers and outlying suburbs of fairly modern homes. But it is suprisingly quite different.I was actually astounded at the number of truly historic areas within the city limits.

Some of the East side suburbs are quite lovely and many are on the historic register. I found that lots of these neighborhoods also have very savvy, involved residents who maintain communications through web sites and online newsletters, and that the neighborhood associations offer a huge variety of wonderful services. I have not seen a city with so many involved neighborhood associations and such an enthusiastic interest in historic preservation.

Greenland Hills is a conservation district that encompasses many older styles: Tudor, traditional, ranch, contemporary. http://www.mstreets.org/activities.html. There are so many advantages to living in a place as friendly and helpful as is this neighborhood. There are lots of activities and a very active neighborhood association. They have been involved in the Dallas Parkway tree planting efforts for planting free trees in public areas. A home tour takes place May6th and 7th. They also have a Halloween fun night and a neighborhood run. As if that weren't enough they've also put together a regular Christmas festival of lights. There is an M Street home tour in Oct. But I was most impressed with their eldercare program for volunteers to assist elderly members who may be shut-ins and need some meal delivery of brief assistance. I would move to this pretty neighborhood at the drop of a hat.
