Sarah Palin's Wardrobe Malfunction: RNC Footing the Bill for Pricey Palin Clothing

The Governor's New Clothes and How to Dress for Less

Sarah Palin's secret is out of the closet. Her fashionable wardrobe is not her typical Alaskan gubernatorial wardrobe. The red leather jacket, the blouses, the smart pants suit worn by Vice Presidential hopeful Sarah Palin were all

purchased through campaign financing. Campaign financing is reported to the Federal Election Commission. This is not the first time that campaign financing for wardrobe and hairstyles has been called into question. Previously, Senator Hillary Clinton ($3,000 for two hairstyling sessions), John Edwards ($400 haircuts) and were all lambasted for haircut and hair styling related campaign expenditures according to Politico.com

However, the $150,000 price tag is what's really drawing attention to Sarah Palin's new wardrobe. Plus the fact that the reporting of these expenditures is only showing up on the September not the August expense sheets.

How exactly can Sarah Palin spend so much money that is not hers in so little time? She recently made some new fans on the campaign trail: Barney, Macy and Neiman Marcus.

Sarah Palin's Costly Clothes

Saks Fifth Avenue in New York and Saks Fifth Avenue in St. Louis: $49,425.74 (Setpember 2008)

Nieman Marcus, Minneapolis: $75,062.63 (September)

Macy's in Minneapolis: $9,447.71

Barney's New York - $789.72

Bloomingdale's New York - $5,102.71

Sarah Palin's wardrobe windfall also benefitted the tiniest Palin. The campagin spent $295 at Steiniauf & Stroller Inc. and a high-end baby store, Pacifier, according to Poltiico.com

Atelier, presumably for her husband, according to Politicao, inclulding at $4,902.45 bill (Septbember)

A portion of the $150,000 cannot be donated to charity, unless it includes used make up or hair extensions. Sarah Palin's wardrobe would not have been complete without $4,714.29 for hair and makeup (September).

Michelle Obama wore plenty of outfits on Inauguration day alone, yet I haven't seen ANYONE trash her. On the other hand, now that Sarah Palin is back in Alaska, she is back to wearing normal clothes. She is a wholesome person who does not dress flashy normally.

Hi Pam, I didn't notice your response. Yes, absolutely, I agree. That money could surely have been put to much better use, and Sarah Palin is absolutely unqualified for the position! That's why I said, I wish clothing were the only issue! There is so much more. This blatant waste of huge amounts of money on external appearance is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the Palin Problem!

I enjoyed your article. Good points and well written. I love how they find it acceptable to spend the money because they're donating the clothes to charities. How appropriate or functional is it to give each high end, high cost piece to an individual?

The issue here really is about partisan attacks, not clothing. Which is fine. But why not call it for what it is? I guess my previous comment was deleted, which is also okay as this is the choice of the content producer. (My apologies if it is still here, but I went through all the pages). I make no apologies for my point of view and neither do I clothe it as reporting.

Susie, it's not about the clothes. It's about the usage of the money. There are plenty of other issues with Palin, btw. None of the candidates is without fault, but she is certainly the least qualified for the position.

Would that clothing were the only issue America has with Sarah Palin. And the clothing issue, as far as I am concerned, is not so much where the money came from, but rather that ANYONE could find it conscionable to spend these exorbitant amounts on clothing and hairstyle. Clothes do not make the man or woman.

I'm less interested in what's on Palin's outside and more interested in what's inside Palin: American heart, mind, and soul.

A. James - the reason the money had to come from RNC rather than from the campaign is because that would violate McCain-Feingold. Palin did not spend her own money on the clothing - she used RNC money (which is actually campaign contributions - but not direct contributions to McCain-Palin - it is a loophole). I work in politics and file disclosure reports all of the time and I certainly know what is and isn't acceptable and legal. Palin has technically complied with the law - but she will have to report the $150,000 as income - and that will hurt. It is other people's money, not hers. I'd like to think she's prudent enough not to spend almost her annual income on clothes and high end accessories. That she would do it with someone else's money causes me to question her judgment and her values. Cindy McCain can spend what she wants, it's her money, but Palin says she's middle class and knows the vlaue of a dollar.

Great informative article, i thought spending public money is only limited to India, i am surprised that USA is also not out of it.

I wrote this up on my blog and was surprised how NOBODY supported the spending - and some are very pro GOP. Thing is when you are trying to connect as "main street" you need to understand them just a bit! Her 7 year old daughter using a $750 purse is obsene! They spent $150,000. were on makeup and makeup consulting (really) before she was even paraded out in front of the public. Bottom line though is two things - 1. This just shows how far apart she really is with other "hockey (or soccer) Moms and 2. That nobody would want their GOP donations to go for clothing Sarah Palin!
