After seeing the movie An Inconvenient Truth this summer, I have since been very disturbed and honestly scared of what our world has come to. The environmental issue of global warming is more real than we can imagine and we as a society are only making it worse. In An Inconvenient Truth, narrator Al Gore explains what will happen to our world should our habits continue - not what could happen, but what will happen. In fact, global warming is already occurring: Look at the pictures of lake Chad from 30 years ago and what it has turned into, then look at the record number of typhoons in Japan, tornados in America, and stronger hurricanes in the US. These storms are no flukes, and only a warning of the drastic climate changes that global warming is able to cause. The facts are undisputed among scientists, despite the words of the popular press. And though you may argue, there is no reason for Gore to lie. As he himself said, "This is not a matter of politics, but a matter of ethics." He presents these facts to us in a hope to change the world for a better, not so he can have his way politically.

I recently sat down with a friend who felt similarly stressed by global warming and talked about what could be done to save the planet we live on. It only took us a short time to conclude that what is more disturbing than global warming itself, is the way that the American people treat the issue. People still feel that it is a hoax created by a liberal agenda, and that it is nothing more than propaganda. This is why the message needs to be brought to attention. Liberals and conservatives, Republicans and Democrats all need to unite to fight this common problem. People are suffering already from global warming, and our world could take a devastating toll if this continues.

Look at the term "green house effect". If you have ever been in a green house, you know its warmer because it takes in heat that it does not release off. Do a science experiment and put green house gases into an enclosed structure. It will be warmer than the ambient air and even warmer than similar structures in the same locality . . . because green house gases hold heat (better). The earth is the same way. It's not that complicated.

Global warming is simply a myth that is able to be perpetuated by the combination of a rotating planets and the axis on which the planet rotates shifting. I am saddened that someone so moronic as Al Gore was able to persuade you otherwise.

One other action recommended is to speak out about your concerns on this issue, as Adam has. He shares his point of view by opening up dialogue. There are degrees of passion and bias on each side...generally this is true of any argument that speaks from your soul. Arguing in itself can be a passionate endeavor. Ultimately, though, we're either still just arguing or we've moved on to taking action as the debate continues to unfold.

My point of view. Theory is theory. A working hypothesis, if you will. There are facts that support both sides of this argument but the theories themselves are not yet proven fact. From that perspective, the question for me is how do I choose to act in response to the information available at this time. And qualify that as information your average Joe, me, can understand. The answer to that is simple. Err on the side of caution. How difficult is it to implement some of the steps that are offered as ways to forestall detrimental effects of global warming? Implement energy saving habits in your home. Recycle. Buy a hybrid car or drive the one I already have less by car pooling or riding my bike. Etc. These are some of the ways recommended by those who are committed to offsetting the negative consequences of global warming, as they see it. As I see it, they're actions that are good for our earth regardless. A matter of behaving as responsible caretakers of our planet. One o

Adam, I quit making comments here because it's clear that you are DETERMINED to believe what you want to believe. If you're a climatologist, you'll never get any government grants to study something that doesn't exist. (and everyone wants gov't grants) The fact is "doom-and-gloom" global warming has less evidence to support it than Bigfoot. But whatever man, do what you want, just dont ever call ME close-minded. . .

Well, then feel free to consult the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change), another reputable (probably knows better than anoyone) source backing the issue at hand.

"I read it on the web" is no more valid than "I saw this movie where this guy boiled a frog." Subtext to my comments is that one must keep an open mind. Mine is open. Abandoning all reason for an emotional reaction is not the correct reaction. The ability to consider all points of an issue before overemphasizing one point of view is the mark of a true rationalist. The jury that "distinguished scientists agree there is an issue at hand" is still out in the scientific community because other distinguished scientists do not agree. NASA has never offered anything but data; no opinions/theories have been put forth. I try to keep up with NASA since I work closely with them on a daily basis.

Barefoot- Sorry, it's all over the web. Here's another one you can check out. Honestly, you can take your pick of source, it's just different wording. In hindsight, I do agree that I didn't pick the most unbias one; I was just trying to back up that NASA has pointed out that global warming is affecting the arctic ice. You can read this one if you want. And even though this happened in March, I figured it might help people come to terms with the fact that yes, distinguished scientists agree there is an issue at hand. That's all. http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2006/03/060308211836.htm

Adam, it doesn't help your cause to quote a blog by someone named "GrrlScientist" whose story starts with an obvious political bent ("the George Bush Gang"). Technically, NASA is part of the Bush Gang BTW. Noting the date of the article, I'll assume the blog referenced a NASA release of Feb. 16, 2006. That report reads, "The evolution of Greenland's ice sheet is being driven by several factors" and attributes nothing to the theory of Global Warming. Rather, it simply lays out the observations of snow accumulation, ice flow, and ice melt. No conclusions are made in that report, but apparently conclusions are drawn for one's own purpose. Who is to say that this is not a natural cycle? One possible answer lies with Medieval Vikings who actually planted grape vines in Greenland. I wonder why they named it Greenland in the first place.

Update: NASA has confirmed that global warming is occurring. Is that enough of a credible source for the doubters out there? http://scienceblogs.com/grrlscientist/2006/03/now_nasa_says_its_getting_warm.php

We have the technology to mass produce cars that could literally get 100+ miles a gallon. We could put solar panels on every home in America. We know how to harness wind energy... There's all kinds of things we can do that would be more efficient and cheaper for everyone!!!... but no, because of politics, lobbyists and money - greedy oil companies - we wont see it anytime soon. If our population keeps growing, we're going to have to change how we do things.

The debate is on. You stirred up the pot and that can be a very good thing. My verdict is still out on this subject as there are so many conflicting studies. However, I intend to keep my mind open and I certainly recognize that there are some things that we can - - AND SHOULD - - do to help the situation without having any major negative impact on life. There is certainly nothing wrong with that. I believe that any good citizen is willing to be inconvenienced for the greater good. However, if people honestly think that we can go back to the horse and buggy days (which I have actually seen proposed by some lunatics) they must realize that isn't going to happen. We have to meet somewhere in the middle. I don't know what or where that is yet. I think there is still a lot of research to be done and actual agreement has to take place. If we cannot even get beyond political boundaries - - which obviously we can't - - then we are in big trouble.

Psst, Daniel-the World Scientists' Warning to Humanity (addressing global warming as well as overpopulation, deforestation, pollution, et.al) was issued in 1992....www.worldtrans.org/whole/warning.html

If we're going to base our conclusions on personal observations in one or two locales, then I can say it's 25F in January at my house so Global Warming is a hoax. If we're going to base our conclusions on thousands of data over the last 100 years, we've trended the last 100 years. If we extrapolate to 10,000 year cycles, we may get close but still could be missing vital data to accurately predict the long-term global weather patterns. Especially if all the data has been influenced by fossil fuels which have been in use roughly during the same time frame as modern weather records; we lack a baseline. Shoot at a star and it only takes 1/1,000 of a degree at the start to miss by light-years.

Very nice! It's nice to know that some people do have their eyes open and can think for themselves! Great article!
