Home schooling parents are always looking for various ways to encourage their children to learn. Field trips are an important part of that process. Different age groups are able to do different activities. I however am going to suggest places that are great for almost any age group. The various activities that you do will depend on the age of the child.

Place #1 Local Aquarium. My kids are too young to learn much technical stuff all at once, so instead we focus on one particular kind of fish per visit. That way it is broken down enough that they can absorb the information at their level instead of taking in too much for it to make sense to them. I have found this to be very good for us, we have learned about otters, sharks, and crabs so far. I usually let the kids pick which fish interests them most, and just give supplemental info about the fish.

Place #2 Sports Event. Ok I am sure this seems strange, but what better way to teach teamwork, manners, plus counting. For example, how many times does he make a basket? All great methods of teaching kids a lot and they do not even realize it! Say a fight breaks out at the game, which is ok; take the opportunity to teach about self-control. It is a great simple way to cover life lessons that everyone should learn.

Place #3 Nature Trail. Most nature trails are full of plants and animals. Take the time to learn as much as possible, about the various plants along the trail including their scientific names and common names. The insects are often good to learn about as well, many varieties are always found by the various types of plants. The various animals found from squirrels, to deer are also good to learn and in person is more effective than in books.

Place #4 Library. Your local library is a great place to take children to help foster a love of books and learning. Most libraries offer a book hour, where one of the librarians will read a story and conduct a small activity. This is a great chance for kids to interact with other children of all ages, while encouraging them to learn about quiet time, and how to sit and quietly listen to a story.
