Republican William Weld Endorses Obama

Analysis of the William Weld Endorsement

18
William Weld is one of the latest Republicans to hop on board the Obama Bandwagon. William Weld told Associated Press that "Sen. Obama is a once in a lifetime candidate who will transform our politics and restore America's standing in the world." He went out to discuss Obama's intelligence, calm temperament, and ability to unite. William Weld was governor of Massachusetts from 1991 to 1997. Before that he was attorney general of Massachusetts. William Weld joins Colin Powell, Christopher Buckley, Julie Nixon Eisenhower, and Scott McClellan in a group of Republican for Obama.

The mainstream media and blogosphere is quick to view Republican William Weld's endorsement as yet another mandate for their chosen candidate Barack Obama. A blogger at bobcesca.com was quick to mock Rush Limbaugh's claim that the Powell endorsement was racially motivated. Rush Limbaugh happens to be one loud extremist who does not represent the entire conservative population. He is wrong to claim that the Republican Obama endorsements were about race. However, there are other factors to take into consideration about the William Weld endorsement.

William Weld Endorses Obama: Rockefeller Republicans

New England Republicans such as William Weld are not mainstream Republicans in today's political climate. If anything, he has more in common with the old Nelson Rockefeller Republicans, who historically represented the liberal wing of the party. William Weld was nominated by President Bill Clinton to serve as ambassador to Mexico. He was never confirmed because the Republican senate had objected to his socially liberal views.
