How to Identify and Care for an AG Perry Peony

Identification of a Peony

The A.G.Perry Peony (Paeonia lactiflora) is a perennial that thrives in zones 4 to 8. The AHS Heat Zone is not defined for this plant. The cultivar is A. G. Perry and it is in the Paeoniaceae family. This plant blooms in early to mid summer. It does not like to be relocated, so be sure to
pick the right spot the first time around.

STEP 1: Identify the A.G.Perry Peony by its dark green leaves and pink-shaded flowers. The leaves have nine lance-shaped leaflets. The edges are rough. The flowers are double or semi-double and are produced at the top of single, red-mottled stems. The flowers are bowl-shaped and are quite fragrant. This plant grows up to 4 feet in height.

STEP 2: Plant the A.G.Perry Peony in deep, humus-rich soil. The soil should have a pH range of 5.5 to 7.5. It should retain some moisture, but should also be well-drained. If you live in a cooler climate, plant in full sun, else plant it in dappled sun. You may have to support the plant with stakes or a wire frame, as the single stems will not hold up the heavy flowers.

STEP 3: Fertilize the A.G.Perry Peony with a water-soluble, quick release fertilizer or an organic fertilizer. If using a water-soluble fertilizer, fertilize every two weeks. If you are using an organic fertilizer, read the instructions on the package, as different brands may contain different ingredients and will have different strengths.

STEP 4: Protect the A.G.Perry Peony from disease such as Verticillium or Fusarium Wilt by not using nitrogen-heavy fertilizers not over watering. Fertilizing too much can also cause wilts. Remove infected plants.

STEP 5: Protect the A.G.Perry Peony from aphids and other pests such as slugs and snails. To control aphids, introduce lady bugs and lacewings to the garden. You can also use an insecticide (preferably organic). For slugs and snails, be sure not to leave overturned pots, tarps and leaf material in the garden. If you see signs of slugs and snails, set beer traps to catch them.
