The great white shark is one of the most legendary animals on the planet and with good reason. The great white shark is an apex predator. Perhaps no other animal strikes as much fear in us as human beings than the great white shark.

Why Does the Great White Shark Scare Us So Badly?

What seems like an obvious answer is not necessarily the right answer. The great white shark is famous for eating every human being it could find during the movie "Jaws" but is this really the reason we are so afraid of it?

Truth is, the great white shark is scary to us because it is something outside of our control. If we are in the water, and the great white shark comes calling, we are helpless. If the great white wants to eat us, it can and will. We know this, and it scares us to death.

Is the Great White Shark Truly Wanting to Eat Us?

The great white shark is actually a bit of a finicky eater compared to other sharks. The tiger shark, for example, is known to eat a tire if it is available. The great white shark likes seals. They will eat other animals given the opportunity and the notion, but they really like seals and other blubbery type sea animals.

Human beings are simply way to skinny and meatless for the great white's taste. This does not mean that the great white will not occasionally stalk and eat a human being. It just means we are not a regular menu item. The great white usually attacks us by accident. They mistake us for seals, or other food sources.

Occasionally, the great white will come up for a curious bite. Sharks do not have hands, so they use their mouth to investigate things they are curious about. Unfortunately a mouth with 3000 teeth and incredible bite pressure is going to damage a human being beyond repair much of the time, regardless of the shark's intent.
