Tips on Selecting the Breed that is Right for You

I love all dogs. I don't believe that any dog is born bad or mean. I believe that, like children, they will be much more social if they are raised around a loving environment. However, there are certain dogs that
have a friendlier temperament and others that are more aggressive. It's important you research the breed of dog you're thinking of getting before you bring it home.

First, educate yourself on the different breeds of dogs. Here is a list of each breed and some of the more popular dogs within that breed.

Hounds - The main feature of this breed is it's sense of smell. Hounds were originally bred for hunting.

Afghan Hound - The long and silky coat on this dog requires a lot of maintenance. If kept clean, it is a beautiful dog. But left unattended, it will quickly become matted and dingy.

Basenji - This dog does not bark! Instead, it very quietly yodels. It has a very cheerful disposition and is great with people.

Bassett Hound - I have a Bassett Hound, and I love him to death. However, they do require a lot of work. To read my full review, just click here.

Beagle - Beagles are good natured and very active. This breed tends to be a bit stubborn and may require firm handling.

Bloodhound - This famous tracking hound is known for his wrinkled skin, and long droopy eyes. These dogs tend to be a bit shy, very gentle and somewhat lazy. They are excellent with children.

Dachshunds - Dachshunds are great little lap dogs and are very affectionate and protective of their family. Their coats can either be long or short. Because of their long backs, they run a risk for slipped discs. It is not recommended that you allow these dogs to jump up on furniture, as it puts pressure on their spine.

Greyhound - Italian Greyhounds, Miniatuare Greyhounds....they are all extremely loving, well behaved dogs. They are a terrific pet to have if you have children. Their coats are close, fine and silky and very easy to take care of.

  • Explore your possiblities when choosing your pet.
  • Find out which animal will suit your personality.
  • Be sure you have enough room for the dog will be bringing home.

"I believe that, like children, they will be much more social if they are raised around a loving environment." Well said. I love dogs like crazy too, currently trying to decide between a German Shepherd and a Beagle, but god it's so hard to choose between. Gj with the long list, it has a lot of good pros and cons that anyone can use.
Nice!
Great article. Can I recommend a collie: smart, friendly, great with kids, energetic, great sense of humor, and wonderful companion
This is wonderfully concise for covering such a broad range of topics. Good job!
Great information!
Lots of helpful information here--I hope the Obamas get a chance to read it! My husband and I are cat people, but I loves me some dogs, too, especially the big, huggable ones like labs and shepherds.
We have a family dog named Whitey. She just had 5 puppies. I don't know what she is, they call her ASKAL or asong kalye (literally, street dog). Well, whatever she is, I really don't know. All I know is that my family loves her and she seems to adore us too! Even me! Congratulations on your award.
