Guiding Light: Celebrating 70 Years

Since the dawn of television, many TV shows have come and gone. This year the daytime drama Guiding Light will be celebrating their 70th Anniversary. Guiding Light is the longest running show in television history. I will look at why this show has been able to survive the changing television climate for so long.

Guiding Light started out as a 15 minute radio program in 1937. It made its television debut on June 30, 1952 on CBS. Through the years Guiding Light has focus on the core families of a small town called Springfield. Viewers have watched the trail and tribulations of the Bauer, Spaulding, Lewis, Shayne, and Cooper families. The show has dealt with many social issues, such as domestic violence, rape, cancer, racism, alcoholism, and HIV. The show also has dealt with trouble teenagers through the years. Like any daytime drama, Guiding Light has had its fair share of star cross lovers and scandalous affairs. At any given time, you can tune in and catch sisters fighting over the same man or a wife cheating on her husband with his son. These are the things that keep viewers tuning into the show on a daily basis.

Guiding Light had a strong matriarch character in the late Bert Bauer. The core couple of the show has to be Josh and Reva, who have been married and divorce on several occasions. There has been an array of different psychos who have walked the streets of Springfield. The show has also had their share of heroes and heroines. Through the years the show has also had characters that you love to hate such as Roger Thorpe and Alan Spaulding.

In the past 70 years, Guiding Light has won numerous awards. Everything from best daytime drama to best writing team. In 2006 the show won Daytime Emmy Awards for Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Younger Actor. Also some movie actors and prime time stars got their start on Guiding Light. Kevin Bacon, Nia Long, Taye Diggs, Melina Kanakaredes, and Hayden Panettiere all received their big break on Guiding Light.
