While winter may be the end of playing golf at the local course for many golfers, it should also be a time of preparation for the upcoming season. Here are some useful tips in helping you make the most of your downtime and making this next season the best yet.

1. Get your golf clubs re-gripped. Winter is a great time to do this. If you don't re-grip your clubs yourself, you can drop them off and have it done. You won't have to worry about a time frame, etc.

Be sure to pick out the right golf grips for your hand size. It can make a big difference in your game. Do you have a broken golf shaft? This is the perfect opportunity to get it fixed. How about the face of your clubs? If they are getting worn, you should have them re-faced.

2. Are you considering buying new golf equipment?

Buying new golf clubs during the winter will net you some great bargains. Prices are cheaper in the off-season and it gives you some extra time to get familiar with the new clubs.

I would advise any golfer who is going to buy new clubs to get fitted for them. Have your swing speed measured so you'll have the correct shaft flex. A pro will also fit you for the proper size and lie angle. Buying clubs that are not the right size will do nothing to help your golf game, and in some instances, can even hurt it.

3. Get some exercise. This tip alone can help add more power and distance to your game, as well as reduce your scores. The best part is that it won't cost you a dime.

Set a time every other day for fitness exercises that will build your golf muscles. Stretching will do wonders for your golf game, and some lifting will increase your power, regardless of age. I'm not talking about sweating and becoming a body builder. Just a basic stretching program and some walking will do wonders for the upcoming golf season.

4. Go to an indoor practice range. If you live in an area that has an indoor golf practice area, be sure to hit some balls every week. Or, if you don't have one; you may want to look at setting up a simple practice mat and a net in your garage. This is very inexpensive and allows you to spend any amount of time working on your game that you want.

Takeaways
  • Winter is a good time to get your golf clubs re-gripped.
  • Buying new golf clubs during the winter will net you some great bargains.
  • Get started on an exercise program that helps in building golf muscles.
