Banned in Singapore upon its release and just now allowed into that country, The Rocky Horror Picture Show will celebrate its 30th on Halloween this year.

The classic Broadway musical turned into a film bombed its opening weekend back in the 70s when it was released as a mainstream movie.

But fast forward a few years and, shown as a midnight movie since then, it has become a cult classic with a long loyal following.

Those who haven't ever seen the film are jokingly called "virgins" by the film's fans.

Rocky Horror has been featured in films such as Fame and its soundtrack is popular to be played at college parties.

Traditionally, moviegoers attending the midnight run would bring props used in the movie and at appropriate times would use them accordingly such as rice being thrown when the film's main characters, Brad and Janet get married and Scot paper towels cascading toward the screen when the doctor in one scene says, "Great Scott!"

Through the years some theaters have gotten stricter about what props they would allow in after so many seats got ruined from water and other assorted materials featured in the film.

Diehard fans dress up as their favorite characters to attend the nighttime screenings, waiting in long lines sometimes, in full attire and sometimes in character.

And seeing the movie on DVD or cable is not the same as experiencing it in the theatre as everyone should.

The film is not for the narrow-minded or the prejudiced but for those who savor the creativity that so many movies today have lost.

The 1975 film starring Susan Sarandon was banned by Singaporean authorities because of its sexual and masochistic content. It also type cast its monster star Tim Curry later starring in "IT" for many years. The actor who played Brad in the film wound up on the t.v. show Spin City years later, now gray and mature though you could still see a hint of the Brad character in him though only a tiny bit.

The movie was made on a shoe-string and the main actors involved say they had no idea it would become such a huge hit and have such a large fan base.

Takeaways
  • Some people bring props to the movie.
  • The film will be 30 years old.
  • It was banned in Singapore.
Did You Know?
Some people bring umbrellas to the show for a rain scene?
