Obama Infomercial to Air on NBC, FOX and CBS Tonight at 8 p.m. Eastern
As widely reported in the media, tonight is the night for Barack Obama to make his prime time pitch to America to help sway any undecided voters to vote for the Obama/Biden ticket next Tuesday. The AP reported that the Obama campaign paid a cool $1 Million per network to be able to air the half hour Obama infomercial at 8 p.m. eastern. The half hour Obama infomercial is also slated appear on a few other networks such as Univision, MSNBC, BET and TV One. Notably absent from the network line up is ABC. ABC had the highest number of viewers of other broadcast networks for the first presidential debate.
Obama infomercial is old hat, already been done
The Obama infomercial that will air tonight at 8 p.m. is not something new. Though we haven't seen a presidential candidate buy up air time in 16 years, it has been done before. Back in 1992 when it was a 3 way race between Ross Perot, Bill Clinton and George H. W. Bush, Ross Perot made an infomercial, complete with charts to solidify his points, that aired during prime time. Extremely wealthy, Perot had no problem coming up with the cash to purchase the prime slots to air his infomercial. However, though wealthy and flush with cash, Perot could not buy the 1992 election, even with a prime time infomercial to reach the masses.
Can Obama's infomercial help him clinch the presidency?
Can the Obama infomercial help Obama win the presidency? Perhaps. As the election nears, the polling data shows a tightening race. Today's Rasmussen polls show Obama leading John McCain 50% to 47%, still within the margin of error. Airing the Obama infomercial tonight could help sway any undecideds his way and airing his the Obama infomercial on networks such as Univision will reach Hispanic voters, as will airing it on BET help solidify his base.
