Nippon Japanese Restaurant in Houston, Texas: A Review

A Fabulous Sushi Restaurant in the Heart of Montrose

Nippon Japanese restaurant is a jewel in the heart of the Montrose area in Houston, Texas. We went for a late lunch on a Saturday afternoon and were seated immediately. The wait staff came over several times to see if we were ready to order and to answer any

questions we might have had. It was not crowded at 2:30 PM but we still appreciated the attentive service. Nippon has bento box lunches for less than $10 however we opted to order a la carte.

Within five minutes of ordering, our appetizer arrived, and shortly thereafter the remainder of our food was on the table. It was as if they were mind readers and knew what we were going to order. You would think the food would not be fresh since it came out so quickly and was probably just sitting in the kitchen waiting for a customer, but that was not the case.

As an appetizer we had the seaweed and cucumber salad which was delicious. Sometimes this dish can be too salty but at Nippon, it was perfect. We shared a California roll, tuna nigiri, and salmon nigiri. The fish tasted fresh and moist and was easy to eat instead of being chewy and hard like at other sushi restaurants.

My husband had a problem keeping his rice and fish together when dipping the nigiri in soy sauce but I did not, so I imagine I'm just more of a sushi connoisseur than he is. Or it could be that I didn't use as much soy sauce which would have given the rice an opportunity to fall apart.

The California roll had two pieces that had a fancy design using the ingredients: crab meat, avocado, and cucumber. The rolls were a bit large to eat all at once, so I took two bites per piece. The California roll was excellent and like the fish, it tasted fresh.

My husband also had the tempura Udon soup which he enjoyed but his only complaint was that it did not have a boiled egg in it; apparently at Nippon they have several different types of Udon soup and my husband must have ordered the wrong one. I noticed the Udon soup also had an abundance of noodles so it is safe to say that this Houston Japanese restaurant does not skimp on their food.
