Affordable Europe Travel: Prague
Prague is one of the most beautiful gothic cities in the world. From strolling on the historic Charles bridge overlooking Vltava River to dancing at some of the hippest venues; it has something in store for almost everyone. In addition, it will not burn a hole in your pocket compared to
some of the other famous European cities such as Paris, London, and Rome. Prague is dazzling to the eyes with its splashes of green patina, ochre roofs, and golden touches. Here are some of the highlights.
Charles Bridge
This picturesque gothic bridge with an alley of baroque statues of saints on the balustrade was once the main connection between the Old Town and the so called" Lesser Town". The Old Town is the original seat of Prague, home to St. Vitus Cathedral, the Prague Astronomical clock, the Prague Castle, and much much more. In the old days, the bridge helped to establish Prague's importance as part of the vital trade route in Europe.
St. Vitus Cathedral
The present day Gothic Cathedral in the Old Town has a rich history to match its impressive architecture characterized by ornate and impressive vaulting. It was founded on 1344 with Charles IV, the Holy Roman Emperor as the main patron. The Emperor intended the cathedral to be the home for coronation, treasury, and the family crypt. A small door in the Wenceslas Chapel leads to the Crown Chamber containing the Bohemian Coronation Jewels. This cathedral is open to tourists for a fee and cameras are allowed in most areas. Once past the entrance, you can visit the many chapels within, visit the crypt downstairs, and climb up the narrow staircase to one of the towers.
