Already Looking into Fun Therapy!

Eamon's Journey Thru Autism

Well, I have always been the kind of person who sees a problems and seeks every possible way to fix it. It must be the nurse in me who sees a problem and comes up with an intervention.

So, since Eamon is a sensory seeker with regards to Sensory Integration Dysfunction (SID) and his body craves activities that will stimulate his tactile, proprioceptive and vestibular senses, I am looking into activities that will meet these needs.

For 6 weeks, Eamon received weekly Occupational Therapy, then entered a 4 week Extended School Year program at our local public preschool program. In addition, I had read Out of Sync child and The Out of Sync Child Has Fun and started implementing certain activities. He was so responsive to these simple and fun activities that I am optimistic that some other alternative fun will help as well.

Therapeutic Horse Back Riding: will offer him stimulation for all his senses, get the brain firing messages back and forth using both sides of the brain simultaneously which will in turn result in increased pragmatics of language and increased core strength which will help with his motor planning needs. I have an application on hand and will be completing it this week.

Swim Therapy: I swam competitively in high school. Since there is not an official program for Eamon until he is 3 1/2 which will be in January, Ed and I have decided to look into joining the local aquatic center and I will work with him...using the kick board, bobbing in the water, blowing bubbles etc will all stimulate the senses he needs stimulated. We are looking into signing up for this soon.

Gymnastics/Tumbling for Tots: this will certainly exercise his gross motor and meet the senses..I am waiting for a call back from them on the details.
