Baby Bottle Review: Dr. Browns
A few weeks after my husband and I welcomed our daughter into the world, we started having a little problem. She would cry, clench her fists and throw herself backwards, especially after eating. Her stomach was distended, hard and she kept drawing her legs up while she fussed. It was definitely a confusing and frustrating time for us. After taking her to the doctor, we learned she had colic, along with GER or Gastrointestinal Reflux. Due to her being a preemie, her digestive system was still immature and sluggish. It caused her sphincter at the top of her stomach to open involuntarily and her stomach contents would back up into her esophagus. Not to mention, cause large gas bubbles to form in her stomach and intestines.
We tried different formulas, I tried breastfeeding again and we also tried different bottles out on the market. Avent, Gerber, Playtex...we'd try them but to no avail. The symptoms generally got worse. My mother then sent us a package of Dr. Brown's bottles, which are advertised to reduce colic and Reflux symptoms. In desperation, we tried them. All we wanted was for our little girl to be comfortable and happy. To our surprise, the bottles worked exactly as advertised. Within a couple days we had a daughter who was resting well, becoming more alert and her crying spells had diminished almost completely.
Now that I'm a Pro- Dr. Brown mother, I want to tell everyone we can about the benefits of this particular bottling system. As with any product, the Dr. Browns bottling system has its benefits and its drawbacks.
The features of the Dr. Brown's Bottles include:
A patented venting system which has a positive pressure flow which is similar, if not exactly, the same positive pressure flow as breastfeeding.
The bottles reduce fluid in the baby's ear, therefore reducing ear- infections.
Relieves the symptoms of colic, such as gassiness, fussiness and spit up.
Now, every product on the market has its drawbacks as well.
Can leak quite a bit, especially if held at a 45 degree angle and the ring is not tight enough.
Difficult to shake formula in, even with the disc that comes with each bottle.
