Fresh Ideas for the New Year: Putting Relationships First

It is only a few days into 2007 and many have already broken those well-intentioned New Year's resolutions. Why not consider what is truly important? Family, loved-ones, and friends - people. It is time to make the relationships - the people in your life - priority #1. It isn't en vogue to be a self-centered, money-grubbing "independent" louse any more, even though you can see these attitudes demonstrated daily in business school. That went out with big shoulder pads and hair.

I have you convinced: now how does one go about putting relationships first? That's the easy part. It is simple: Pick up the phone! Your Mom, Dad, Grandma, Grandpa, Aunt, Uncle, Cousins, etc. would probably like to hear from you, especially if you live far away. Although, rest assured, they love hearing from you even if you live close! It isn't as hard as it sounds. You don't need to spend tons of money on a top of the line phone plan. There are cheap calling cards, good cell phone plans with lots of minutes, and even cheap Internet options out there. Also, don't feel like you have to talk long. Just say hi and ask about what is going on in his or her life. For example, my Dad is not good at talking on the phone at all (and doesn't really like it), but I still ask him about what is going on, etc. I just understand when he hands me over to my Mom, stating, "here's your Mom, I'm not very good at this!"

If you hate the phone, there is always old-fashioned letters and e-mail. This may be a great option for someone like me, who loves to write, but what if you hate that too? Well, then you just need to get creative. Plan to meet up with people and go out to lunch or dinner. This is a particular favorite of my Grandmother's. It is great! We talk about anything and everything, and I learn a lot about my family history.
