Nottaway Plantation sits quietly across from the Mississippi River about 200 feet from the levee just north of White Castle, Louisiana. Looking at the unique Greek Revival style plantation, one might mistake it for a "white castle" as it marks a unique place in the history of Louisiana as being one of the largest antebellum plantations in the south. It was built in 1858 by John Hampden Randolf, encompasses 6,200 acres, and was the center of a working sugar cane plantation. Nottaway was spared being destroyed in the Civil War and most recently spared from any major damage during hurricanes Katrina and Rita to the area.

The whole environment at Nottaway is peaceful and relaxing. The grounds are filled with huge moss draped oak trees, flowing plants, a reflection pond, several gardens, a duck pond, a secluded pool for guests and a separate small private swimming pool at the Overseer's Cottage. You will find a great escape here from the everyday hustle and bustle of the big city!

Nottaway contains a total of 64 rooms, and 7 staircases in the huge 53,000-square foot plantation home. It is open to the public for daily tours except for major holidays. They also have a full service restaurant open for lunch and dinner that can accommodate 250 guests. If you are looking for the perfect setting for a Valentine's Day getaway or Anniversary trip, overnight accommodations are available. Rooms are fully decorated with authentic antiques, including huge four poster beds, sleigh beds and half-tester beds. Guests wake up each morning to the scent of freshly baked sweet potato muffins drifting through the air.

Just sit back and let your imagination run wild as I take you through a guided tour of some of the guest rooms. There are 7 rooms available in the plantation house and 3 suites plus 4 rooms available in the Overseer's Cottage on the grounds. Each room is unique in décor and provides a private setting for couples to enjoy this special event.

I have been on a tour of the Nottaway Plantation (several years ago), but have never stayed there myself. I bet it would be a wonderful and romantic place to stay, especially if you are a history buff. Great article :)
