Today, it was announced that if the vote were taken again knowing what they know now-which is only slightly more than what Pres. Bush knew then-so many Senators, both Democrats and Republicans, would change their vote that the decision to go to war against Iraq would be voted down. In fact, some have suggested that the evidence is so slight it would never have made even made it to the Senate floor for a vote. (By the way, just so's you know, John McCain is among those who has said he would NOT change his vote knowing what he knows now. Remember: A Vote for John McCain is like a third term for Pres. Bush.) Every time I write that Pres. Bush has lied-and often-about the war in Iraq I receive an assault on my ratings from the right-wingers and I am told to stop spreading lies myself. Apparently, Bush's hardcore supporters refuse to believe that their hero is quite simply the closest thing to a pathological liar we've ever had in the Oval Office. Herewith, some basic factual evidence that Bush has lied-repeatedly-about his plans, policies and actions concerning Iraq even before he was appointed President by Scalia and his lapdogs.

Lie number 1: In a 2000 Presidential debate with Al Gore, Pres. Bush infamously said, "I don't believe the US military should be used for what's called nation-building."

The evidence is in from members of Bush's own advisors that even before making this statement, his crackerjack team was drawing up plans to invade Iraq and remake it into a democratic county. It is unfortunate that he didn't present those plans at the time, because his plan for nation building apparently was limited to: Get rid of Saddam Hussein and the rest will take care of itself.

Lie number 2: In October of 2002 Pres. Bush made this statement. "The Iraqi regime is a threat of unique urgency. . . . It has developed weapons of mass death"

Takeaways
  • Enough Senators have now said they would have voted against the Iraq war if they'd had all the evidence to have had that war voted down.
  • John McCain is not one of those Senators. John McCain would still vote FOR the Iraq invasion even knowing what we all know now.
  • Pres. Bush's lies about his Iraq policy actually began during the 2000 Presidential debates.
Did You Know?
Pres. Bush reportedly now believes the one person in the entire US military who is most capable of being in charge of a police action in a land-based war is...a Naval admiral! Pardon me for not being surprised by this revelation.

Impeachment would be reasonable. The only problem is that if impeachment is started, Bush will be convicted because there are simply too many felonies to overlook (such as illegal wiretapping). We've never actually had a President convicted and I imagine that many would see this as shameful to have a former President in prison.

Paul Angelfire, nice attempt at distraction. How smart the Senate or Tim is has nothing to do with whether or not Bush lied. It has been made very clear that only partial information was being given to the Senate. They were not fooled so much as misinformed. If the intelligence given to the Senate contained only information that made it look that Saddam was a threat, while the information that suggested he was not a threat was simply not given, you cannot blame the Senate for coming to false conclusions. If you bothered to follow the news, you would know that this in fact is exactly what happened. This is why the previous Republican controlled Congress has delayed the investigation as to WHY the information was so wrong on Saddam. It's also why Bush is beefing up his legal staff right now.

Strangely Mark---the Bush administration attempted to use the Hussein Kamel testimony to strengthen their case for invasion by taking his statements out of context.

My article on impeachment covers all of this if any one is interested...

Missed one...Truthteller, many senators have come out and said that they were given only partial information, not the full picture Bush was given. British Intelligence has stated that the administration fixed the "facts" around the policy of invasion. Most of the testimony used by the CIA came from Gen. Hussein Kamel, who was killed after returning to the middle east. He described Saddam's weapons programs PRE-Gulf War One, and said they had been destroyed afterwards. The reports given simply lopped off the second part of the testimony, the part that outlined the destruction of the weapons, and the information given to the Senate was only the descriptions of the weapons development. http://www.fair.org/press-releases/kamel.pdf. In the transcript (p. 13), Kamel says bluntly: "All weapons-- biological, chemical, missile, nuclear, were destroyed."

Because I'm a liberal! Can I take one third of your hard earned money and give it to undeserving lazy poor people? (The fact that about 1% of 1% of taxes goes in any way towards poor people completely escapes these lunkheads. I guess it doesn't bother them that the vast majority of tax money lines the pockets of the already rich military-industrial complex. In Halliburton we trust. :)

Hey Mark, why are you such an America hating communist?

Posted on 01/06/2007 at 4:01:00 PM

Now, following the standard right-wing technique of debate, the following replies should be: So what if he lied? (Meaning we're right, but you can't admit it.) He probably had a good reason. (Irrelevent to the facts) You liberals hate America! (Ad hominem, distraction and straw man all in one statement. Impressive, but ineffectual attack.) F-you! You...you...liberal! (Which used to be followed by having all your friends click on the thumbs down symbol.)Have a nice day.

Sorry - that should be: Either the president knows he is not stating the truth at these times, AND he's deliberately lying. If he doesn't know he's lying, then again, the alternative is even more frightening

These are statements made by the president that are not true. The press conference where he clearly states that there will be no warrantless wiretaps was also untrue. Whether you see it as a threat or not, it is factually untrue. Either the president knows he is not stating the truth at these times, or he's deliberately lying. If he doesn't know he's lying, then again, the alternative is even more frightening - he doesn't know what's going on, to the point of being ignorant of what's going on around him.

For the finale, here's the source on the weapons inspector s quote. "We gave him a chance to allow the inspectors in, and he wouldn't let them in." -- Press Conference (7/14/2003). There were two other incidents of similar statements as well.

Daniel, quoting anyone else's opinion, even Nancy Pelosi, is the technique called distraction. What pelosi did or didn't say or believe has nothing to do with Bush lying or not. I wish they'd teach proper debate in schools. A disturbing amount of people are subject to ad hominems, straw men and distractive arguments. Bush claimed to have watched the first plane fly into the tower in Florida. The accepted narrative proves he could not have. He's either lying, or he's telling the truth. If he's telling the truth, it's even more disturbing. It means the entire story we've been given is a lie.

Thanks, Tim, I was about to go digging for quotes for JR. Iraq was determined to not have ties with Al Qaeda by the president's own commissions, from the 911 commission to the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence. A 2005 CIA assessment on Saddam states "did not have a relationship, harbor, or turn a blind eye toward Zarqawi and his associates,"

Woops! It's 2007--my bad.

Oliver, I didn't say I was better than you, but your bringing it up is an interesting comment on your self esteem. I was discussing debating techniques. Mentioning Tim's political perspective is valid in challenging his conclusions, but not his facts. There are multiple instances of Bush's plan to attack Iraq available through google. For starters, Paul O'Neill and Bob Woodward both quote Bush as having plans to attack Iraq before Sept. 11th. Time quoted Bush as saying, "Fuck Saddam, we're taking him out" long before the UN sanctions, and before any intent to attack Iraq was brought up to the American people.
