Election Day: The Day for Change?

What Kind of Change?

I don't believe I have ever heard the word "change" so much in my entire life. It seems to me, at times, that people want change whether it's good or bad. It's like people just know they want change and they don't care if it's good or bad, just so it's change. We had a big change on
 9-11-2001, remember?

We've been hearing for months, "We need change!" Political candidates promise it. People seem to accept it. But do we need change simply for the sake of change or should we have the wisdom to know what kind of change is needed and what should stay the same?

The call for change is like the call from God to repent as nations, communities and individuals. Throughout the Bible, God calls on His chosen people (both Israel and the church) to repent. Repentance is change. It is a change in direction, attitude and the mind. Since we are promised change, we should wisely ask if this is the result of national repentance. Change should only come as the result of wise choices based on sound principles.

I have deep concern for the nation that I deeply appreciate and love. It is disturbing to consider the results of the wrong kind of change. We have only one hope to avoid a spiritual and moral meltdown. We must turn to the true agent of change: Jesus Christ.

The proper conduit for change on the earth is the New Testament church. This supernaturally-transformed body of believers, changed by faith in a living Lord, must define and demonstrate life as it should be lived. Not only has Jesus Christ set the example through His life and died to make it available, He has also sent another of the same kind (the Holy Spirit) to enable us to live what He taught.

The church was never meant to be a political power base. Scripture makes it clear that "it's not by might, nor by power, but by His Spirit" that necessary change is accomplished. If ever the church believes we can boast in our numbers and simply out-vote the opposition to bring change, we are deceived.

April, you articulated these thoughts so eloquently. I am writing this post-election because I have unfortunately gotten so busy with other things right now that I can't comment as quickly as I used to---let us pray that President Obama and his cabinet make wise, sound choices for our nation and society, and that we people know how and when to speak up---as we have in the past---when and if we think we don't like the direction we are heading. And, of course, celebrate and cheer when we believe the nation is on the right track, too....

Oh, AMEN! This new president and his administration need our prayers. Let's pray that God gives him the wisdom to make the right decisions, the courage to take a stand for what's right for America, and the maturity to take things slowly. Thanks for this, April.

Great perspective. Hey, no matter how an election turns out . . . we know WHO has the answers.

Oh April - this analogy between government "change" and the change Jesus give us is powerful. I agree with Katlyn's comment too. Excellent piece. The whole key is your line 'government will be changed by people who live rightly'.
