Thanksgiving Craft: Ice Cream Cone Cornucopia

Crafts Kids Can Do

This adorable sugar cone cornucopia is ideal for young children to make as a snack or as a place setting for Thanksgiving dinner. Made from a simple sugar cone and filled with an assortment of fruits and berries this cornucopia is as much fun to make as it is
to eat. As a classroom activity, the cornucopia can be made during center time and eaten as a class snack.

You will need: Sugar cone for each child, pull apart Twizzlers, fresh or dried fruit of berries (blue berries, raspberries, cranberries, raisens), assorted nuts, M&Ms white Icing, small paper plates, and small doilies.

Make a decorators icing bag from a plastic storage bag. Partially fill the bag with icing and squeeze out excess air. Seal the bag. Snip one corner of the bag and squeeze frosting through the hole.

Squeeze a thin line of decorators icing around the mouth of the sugar cone. Peel apart the twizzlers and wrap a section around the mouth securing it with the icing. Create a small bow and press into the icing.

Squeeze a small amount of icing inside the sugar cone. This will hold the bits of fruit and nuts in place and prevent the contents from spilling out onto the table.

Insert the largest sections of fruit and nuts into the cone and push firmly in place. Once the solid base of fruit and nuts are securely in place, smaller items can be added by daubing in icing and pressing in place. Place a small portion of icing on a paper plate for each child to dip his items in before adding to the cornucopia.

Small children will benefit from sorting the fruit, nuts and candies by size prior to beginning the project. Sorting by color is also a great way to encourage children to arrange the contents of the cornucopia with a variety of colors and sizes.

Display the cornucopia on a doily lined paper plate. Write the guest's name on the side of the cone with decorators icing, if using them for place settings. If your school or classroom has a Thanksgiving dinner for parents, this is a great way to show off children's work and arrange seating at the same time.

This is a really great craft idea. Using an ice cream cone would really simplify making a Thanksgiving cornucopia. And you can eat it afterwards, too! I've featured this Thanksgiving craft idea on my blog at http://thanksgivingcraftsandhealthyrecipes.blogspot.com/

What a clever idea. Might also be a good way to keep kids busy while TG dinner is cooking! I will forward a link to this to my friends who have a little boy! :)
