Pelosi took the speaker's gavel from Representative John Boehner, the now-minority leader, on Thursday. In doing so ending 12 years of Republican control of the lower house of Congres. This providing another historical measure to further signify the importance of her appointment, which was met with rounds of applauds from both Republicans and Democrats.
She proudly proclaimed before House of Representatives, 'i accept this gavel in the spirit of partnership, not partisanship, and I look forward to working with you". The California Democrat won with 223 votes, a majority of the 435 members of the House took her place in history with grace and a leadership that looks to work with both parties fairly.
The 66-year-old Pelosi is the first mother to take the chair and the first grandmother. She was certain to make that fact known to the nation. Pelosi seen holding her infant grandson minutes after the House convened at noon walked down the center aisle with her grandchildren - five boys and a girl. "For our daughters and granddaughters," she said to cheers in the first address as speaker, "today we have broken the marble ceiling."
"My fellow Americans," he told the House, "whether you are a Republican or a Democrat or an independent, today is cause for celebration." Her speech laced with biblical references, including a prayer from St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of San Francisco "where there is darkness, may we bring light, where there is hatred, may we bring love, and where there is despair, may we bring hope." She also mentioned her husband Paul Pelosi; her brother, a former mayor of Baltimore; of her deceased parents, who devoted their lives to public service proclaiming them now with "the angels"
