Going to the dentist is not only necessary, it can be very expensive, and that's why having dental insurance is very important. The bigger issue is finding the best dental insurance plan that is the right fit for you and your family.Of course, if you have an employer paid dental plan, then you may have all the coverage you could ever need. You'll have coverage for fillings, cleanings, and other work such as crowns, braces and root canals. Most of the time an employer plan will work well if it's a comprehensive plan.
For those who have no dental insurance or need a more comprehensive plan, here are some of the more important things to look for.
1. Choice of dentist - Does the dental plan you're looking at have your dentist on the list? If not, you may ask them to get on the list or you'll have to move on the someone else.
2. Preventive care - This is the most used coverage on any dental insurance plan. Read over the fine print and fully understand what is covered. Any good dental coverage should provide for two cleanings a year, x-rays and a check-up at no extra cost.
3. Pre-existing conditions - Does the plan you're considering exclude pre-existing conditions such as gingivitis, gum disease, and other disorders? Some insurance plans do, while others do not.
4. Crowns and braces - What is the policy benefits for more expensive procedures and areas such as crowns, root canals and braces?
Other questions you will want to ask yourself include:
-Will it be your insurance company or your dentist who has the final say in what treatment is needed and will be covered?
-Does the dental insurance plan cover visits and treatment to a specialist if you need one? Can you choose the specialist or does the insurance company assign you to one?
-What about emergency treatment? Perhaps you have a tooth knocked out in an accident or develop an abscess. Is it covered?
-Are you covered in the event you need false teeth or dentures?
These are all important questions to know the answers to before deciding on any insurance plan. Depending on your situation, you can sue your answers to find the dental insurance that is right for you.
