Elkhart, Indiana Makes National News Again: Unemployment is 9%

Elkhart, Indiana is the RV Capital of the World

Elkhart, Indiana made national news again today. The nation has a 6% unemployment rate, but Elkhart has a 9% unemployment rate. It isn't what Elkhart, Indiana wants to be recognized for.
We are the RV capital of the world. We are now officially in a recession in the United States of America.

You would find residents of Elkhart, Indiana and the surrounding areas more likely to be in agreement that we are officially in a depression. Ironically, or is it, now that the recreational vehicle business has all but crumbled, the gas prices are zooming below $2.00 a gallon? Well thank you big oil companies, now that you have completely destroyed the economy, and automobile manufactories are also folding, you have amazingly lowered gas prices.

Supply and demand, ha, well now that people are losing their jobs, and businesses are folding in record numbers, I guess people don't need gas to go to work. I guess they don't need to go to the grocery stores, or shopping for anything else either. Christmas is just around the corner though. I am sure that that will bring shoppers out to buy tons of presents for their loved ones. Take heart big oil companies, I am sure that you won't be suffering along with Joe-six-pack and the soccer, or is it hockey moms?

Good luck President elect Barack Obama I hope that you can pull off rescuing the American people. I know that many of those of us who voted for you are putting faith in you that you will be able to turn our country around. At least we have hope for a better future.

It's depressing for many, that's for sure. My son has been unemployed for most the past 18 months. Things have to get better.

They are predicting 10% unemployment nationwide within a year. Some small cities and towns are hit harder. Hopefully there will be a recovery within a couple of years. Great article.

Gas is under $2 here, for the 10% ethanol Super variety. I have hopes, but don't expect change to happen fast.

Unemployment has been above 10% all over the country for years! The official figures have been a lie from the start. They just can't deny them anymore, with places like Elkhart.

Great sad story. I think it was because of the gas prices that the RV business tanked; I don't know if dropping gas prices will bring it back until there are more businesses with more jobs. What is most -- annoying? Appalling? Infuriating? -- anyway, is that Exxon-Mobile just broke their quarterly profit record AGAIN. 14.5 BILLION dollars in PROFIT -- not just sales, but PROFIT. GRRR.

A lot of us are pinning so much hope on Obama. (I hope we're not being unrealistic. "?") Many prayers are going up about recovery... the first one was answered with Obama's election. Keep the faith. (PS- Gas went below $3 here for the first time last week.)

Things will turn around but it will take time. There is no quick fix for some of the mess we let greedy people get us into. Unfortunately, the greedy people are multimillionaires and billionaires who will ride out the mess they created in style. Being on a retirement fixed income, it will not be that easy for me or the millions of other middle class and working poor who got screwed over. Superior article!

Great story but dont you find it amazing that the gas prices went high and the economy dumped and then Obama got elected because he claimed to be able to fix it but now the prices of gas are going back down and hmmmm.
