The Basics of Medicare

There are many frustrating aspects of Medicare. Being unable to afford the medical care you need can be an excruciating burden. Adding to the frustration is the uncertainty of whether or not you will be eligible for Medicare. You many be frustrated because the wealth of information about Medicare is staggering and it can be confusing.

How does Medicare work? Medicare is a government funded program that help those in need with health care costs. Medicare covers a wide variety of people, for numerous reasons. Many people who are elderly apply to Medicare because they have extremely high health cost and limited income. Often times the financial burden of medical expenses is overwhelming.

Will I be eligible for Medicare?

It is important to understand the criteria and eligibility requirements for the Medicaid program. You may be able to take advantage of this program, and receive assistance with your medical problem. You may be covered by Medicaid if you have high medical bills, you receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI), or if you meet certain income, resource, age, or disability requirements. Medicaid will allow you get the help you need to get and stay healthy, no matter what your financial situation.

How do you determine if you are eligible for Medicaid or not?

In order to be considered for Medicaid, you must fall into a designated eligibility group. Having a low income is just one criteria for Medicaid eligibility. Your assets and resources are also measured against established standards. If you are eligible for Medicaid, you may or may not also receive cash assistance from programs like TANF (Temporary Assistance to Needy Families) or SSI.
