Romance doesn't mean just whiling your way in front of a cozy fire or lazing around doing nothing. For couples who love the outdoors but are busy working, some weekend time off would put the "romantic" back in their relationship.
Knoxvillians who want to get away for a romantic weekend have several choices based on their particular desires. Knoxville, located at the edge of the Great Smokey Mountain National Park, is situated near many scenic drives and trails situated along delightful mountain streams and creeks rushing over rocky beds and adjacent to plush Rhodendrums and wildflowers along the way. The entire area is one long romance with nature perfect for the weekend traveler who wants to drive the scenic routes, choose a cozy bed and breakfast or mountain inn, or raft and canoe in the area. Even skiing may be an option at some of the Gatlinburg locations.

Nantahala is within easy driving distance of both Knoxville and Atlanta. They lead rafting trips on 7 whitewater rivers in the area, including the Ocoee, the site of some winter Olympics some years back. Their web site also offers a medley of lodging options and lots of services, including classes and outdoor adventure specials. This would be one of the best weekend outings for the jaded Knoxville professional wanting to just get out into nature an enjoy the river life.

I personally love whitewater rafting and there are several outfitters at some of the creeks and streams that you can decide on. Nantahala is quite famous, as it has grown into a real destination for people wanting to learn about canoeing, kayaking and rafting. It draws people from all over the country. Remember that the Smokies have some of the tallest mountains in the Eastern U.S. and because of this there are a myriad of tumbling streams with rapids and waterfalls. - Welcome to the Nantahala Outdoor Center - :: NOC If you're a beginning canoer or a full-fledged one, with all the equipment, Nantahala is a mecca for you. Their site is a resource for every Knoxvillian or anyone else, for that matter, for learning, for their store, for their tours and training.
