I know I'm not the only one who feels this way but do you ever feel like you just have to have something in your mouth? You have to have something to chew on whether it's food or your pen. I feel this way all the time; I just don't feel right unless I can chew on something. Of course this was a problem because it led to me eating too much. Eventually I came up with a solution. I'll get some candy, that way I'll have something to put in my mouth instead of food. The problem with that was I was now eating an entire bag of Reese's peanut butter cups in one day. Finally I decided the solution was to chew gum. About three months ago I took a trip to my old stomping grounds, the local super Walmart, to find some gum to chew on. There are plenty of options of gums at a Super Walmart; nearly a whole aisle is dedicated to gum. I was sifting through my options and realized there are two types of gum. There are sticks of gum like Big Red, Cinnaburst, and Juicy Fruit and then you have your bubble gum like Bubblicious and Hubba Bubba. The bubble gum comes in raspberry, blueberry, sour apple, and many others. There are even some kinds of Bubble gum that have one flavor in the middle and another flavor on the outside. I spent fifteen minutes alone on the gum aisle when it hit me. There is no bubble gum flavored bubble gum.

Takeaways
  • I like original flavored bubble gum
  • I like original flavored Klondike bar
  • I like original flavored Pepsi

Great piece of consumer logic, Lee, presented in a quirky, humorous way. Too bad the manufactories haven't figured this out. It's all about who can get the longest shelf space to plaster their brand name in front of our eye balls.

We might turn Lee on if we keep talking like this.

This article is great! I have to agree with both Susan (freakishly similiar thoughts) and Donna (... like to have something in your mouth?). Too much fun!!

I worked as a merchandise sales researcher and one of the least sold gum flavors is plain bubble gum. The ratio is huge and I don't remember the exact number but it was something like 300 packs of flavored gums to every one pack of original. Companies don't leave what doesn't sell on the shelves, they simply can't afford to.

By the way, this made me giggle: "I know I'm not the only one who feels this way but do you ever feel like you just have to have something in your mouth?"

Lee- I thought the same thing about all the new Hershey's stuff-- have you seen that? White chocolate kit-kats, kit-kat with caramel, hershey's with brownies, hershey bars with caramel, etc., etc.... And back to bubble gum-- I know why there is limited bubble gum flavored gum!! All the bubble gum flavoring is going to make bubble gum cough syrup, bubble gum ice cream, bubble gum lollipops (which don't even have bubble gum in them), bubble gum jelly beans, bubble gum chapstick..... Great article, and so, so true. But, I love the new wild cherry vanilla Dr. Pepper.
