Austin, Texas, police officers found 40 to 60 dead birds, including grackles, pigeons and sparrows, on Congress Avenue in downtown Austin in the early morning hours of Monday, Jan. 8, 2007.

The high number of dead birds spurred police to alert the Texas Department of State Health Services, which was investigating the cause of the birds' death at the time this article was posted.

Congress Avenue, from Second Street to 11th Street, was closed as a precaution until the investigation and clean-up were complete. Officials expected to reopen the street at noon on Monday.

In a Monday morning press conference, a health department spokesman said that an on-site investigation had not produced any evidence of a health risk to Austin citizens. The spokesman said that a necropsy was being performed on one of the birds to determine the cause of death, and further viral and bacterial testing would be conducted. Officials do not believe the birds were victims of avian influenza; preliminary evidence suggests the birds were poisoned.

Before I saw your update, I was kind of freaked out. Your picture of the birds looks like a scene from a horror movie. :-)

How Pathetic, I wouldn't be suprized if the trail to this poisoning didn't lead right to the Capital. One dead bird should have been offered to a independant study, this is nothing less than a cover up. Mass numbers of birds just don't die all at once from Tempurture drops and or the combination of temp drops and internal parasites. Oneday a child will perish from direct contact with a poisoned bird and then the public will demand changes be made, but as long as the Precious life of a human was not at risk (only wildlife) the poisonings will continue.

And if you believe that I have some prime ocean front property for sale in new mexico, these birds were poisoned...bottom line. There is a cover up happening, a major cover up...many birds and different breeds at that don't just up and die all at once from parasites and or temp drops, if you belive this stipid responce then you will believe anything....

Update on this topic: An animal expert at Texas A&M University has reported that these birds did not die of poisoning after all. Their deaths were caused by a combination of internal parasites and a rapid drop in temperature. The temperature dropped 10 degrees within a few hours that night.

Whew...If Avian Bird Flu reached the US, there would be disastrous effects... most of our food is imported, we normally keep only 2-3 weeks chlorinated water in each towns water works.... if we had to make it with our borders completely shut down, it'd be like a movie on the Apocalypse(sp?).... Lord, what a thought, huh?
