Tips for Chasing Away the Holiday Blues

Alone for the Holidays? Here Are Some Tips on How to Deal...

It's that time of year again. The holiday season is upon us. If you're like most people, this is a great time of the year with memories of past holidays and anticipation of the festivities ahead. For some, though, especially those that are single and live alone, the holidays can be an
even more lonely and stressful time. Here are some great tips on chasing away the holiday blues if you're single.

Big Picture

You may think that you're down and out and that your depression will never end, that it's a normal part of your life, but sometimes (especially during the holidays), it's a good idea to look at the "big picture." To do this, write down (or type up) the positive and negative things in your life. You can pat yourself on the back for the positive things and work out a plan to fix the negative things in your life - or at least try.

When you get lost in the day to day rat race, it's easy sometimes to forget the big picture regarding your life. Take time during the holidays to reaffirm who you are and how you do have value and worth.

Treat Yourself

Here's one positive about not having a lot of friends or family to buy gifts for during the Holiday Season - you can buy yourself gifts. Don't go too overboard, but treating yourself (be it a nice dinner out and a movie or a new video game system) is a great way to get your spirits up a little bit.

This may seem like putting a bandaid on a bigger problem, but for most people it's one way to effectively help battle the routine of day to day life and the depression that sometimes comes with it, even moreso during the holidays. This is not a cureall and you don't want to create new problems by using this method, but every once in a while it's nice to treat yourself.

Volunteer

Just because you might not have a lot of close friends or family, you don't have to spend the holidays alone. No, I'm not talking about crashing someone's Thanksgiving dinner. There are, though, a lot of opportunities for volunteers during the holidays. Instead of sitting home alone watching the Twilight Zone marathon and eating a frozen dinner, why not donate some of your time to help others in need.
