Gateway's latest offering in the world of low-cost mobile computing is their MX3230, an incredibly inexpensive but capable lightweight laptop with many features others in the $400-$500 price range simply don't offer. Unfortunately, Gateway's offering is equally full of irritating shortcomings, though many may find these issues irrelevant considering the low cost of the computer. The MX3230 comes from the factory with a 14 inch widescreen display, a 1.50 Ghz. Intel Celeron M processor, built-in WiFi 802.11b, 256 MB of ram, a non-removable CD-RW/DVD drive, two USB ports, an SD Memory Card reader and a built-in 10/100 LAN port. It ships with Windows XP Home Edition, with no factory software upgrade options.

The 14 inch widescreen is well-suited to watching widescreen movies, with impressively sharp resolution and good colour at even the most extreme viewing angles. The low profile of the screen is also well-suited to usage in the cramped conditions on many airlines, where using a laptop on the short seat-back tray table may present screen angle problems. Gateway's laptop is easier to use in these situations than other laptops of similar screen size that I've tested on airlines, making it one of my top picks in its class for air travel. It's also fairly lightweight considering it's size, weighing in at only 5.2 lbs. A nearly full-sized laptop keyboard with quiet, firm key action completes the package. However, this is where the good aspects of this particular laptop end.

Takeaways
  • Gateway's MX3230 is an inexpensive mobile computing option.
  • The MX3230 is a poor buy however, unless price is your only concern.

I think this is the best notebook i ever had, its small and lightweight. I had to remove all the software and applications of Gateway, cuz it really slowed down the notebook. I upgraded to 1GB of ram, and it works SO PERFECT ! It takes 1:20 minutes to start. I have 3 years with my laptop and iI just really love it, and I don't know what I'm going to do when I need to purchase another one cuz i really hate Windows Vista, its so slow, and takes hours to start ! The laptop falled down from my table and I have to say my DVD/CD-RW and Memory Card reader passed away, because of hat :( I really love the performance of this notebook.

I agree with Has No Problems. The unit did have a full complement of crapware including a Gatweay diagnostic program. I think that's what most people seem to be having problems with. It did slow down the computer considerably. I increased the memory to 1gb, put in an 80GB (5400rpm) drive and used the original WinXP recovery discs. Had a problem with with the Wireless card too, but with the Gateway tech support being surprisingly good, it was repaired within week door to door. No problems since. I like the fact it is rather lightweight; about 5lbs or so. Better than my 7lb Compaq laptop! Still spent only $400 total after the upgrades.

The only people to post are those that are disappointed. I thought that the laptop was well worth the money and it has been a few years and it has last the dropping and three days on periods for me. I upgraded my hard drive for very cheap 20 for an online auction a new ram stick 1 GB 29.94 and a new processor and yes it is possible i didn't it and very happy. no problems here.

I purchased this one for school. While I agree with the above reviews, the problems became more manageable after I reformatted the computer. The wireless card and cd drive broke within a month of purchase.

I got this laptop for Christmas and it *sucks*. I can't run more than 2 programs at once without it crashing. Next time, I buy a Vaio.

I purchased this computer as a temporary stop gap between desktop models. When car repair bills ate my computer fund it became my full-time computer and I couldn't be more miserable. Within a week of the warranty expiring I had to replace the hard drive (I upgraded of course). However, I have had continuous problems with the computer crashing. Quite a few of the problems seem to originate in the registry. I pretty much have to backup every third key stroke. Sometimes I don't even have all my programs reinstalled before it crashes again. I will not purchase another Gateway product and you can quote me on that.
