Browse your local library. Library cards are generally free and you can check out books anywhere from two weeks to a month depending on your area's library. Alibris specializes in rare and very old books so if there's a specific book you'd like to read buy can't find it on Amazon, Alibris is likely to have it.

Many publishing files make up their own list of "the best books". The Modern Library and Time magazine both have their own specialized lists. There's a wide variety of books on both so it's unlikely that any one person will have read them all. Just google "best 100 books" or any variation of that phrase and you'll get results.
