A huge number of people know how to read, yet few actually spend leisure time reading. That time has been taken up with television, video games, and the internet. For many people, it's been so long since they've read a good book they've forgotten how to find one! Here's your guide to finding a good book to read. You can read.... so pick up a book and increase your literacy quotient!

Local Library
Browse your local library. Library cards are generally free and you can check out books anywhere from two weeks to a month depending on your area's library. Many libraries will have a recent bestsellers section so you can check out what people are writing and reading now. If you'd really like to challenge yourself, head on over to the classics section. The covers usually aren't as exciting, but you know what they say....
Librarians are generally very well read and can recommend a number of books to you if you really can't find anything.

Local Bookstore
It's their business to sell you books. You can be sure they will try to direct you to something that appeals to you. Many bookstores are also now making sure they have comfy couches for you to lounge on. Many times those comfy couches are accompanied by a coffee house.

Online
Websites like Amazon, Abe Books, and Alibris offer a wide variety of books to choose from. Amazon also shows you other selections of books you might like based on what you're looking at now. Alibris specializes in rare and very old books so if there's a specific book you'd like to read buy can't find it on Amazon, Alibris is likely to have it.

Lists
Many publishing files make up their own list of "the best books". The Modern Library and Time magazine both have their own specialized lists. There's a wide variety of books on both so it's unlikely that any one person will have read them all. Just google "best 100 books" or any variation of that phrase and you'll get results.

Takeaways
  • Check your local library or bookstore first.
  • Book clubs are a good way to find good books and meet new people.
