Ever since I blew out my lower back, not once, not twice, but on three separate occasions, I am always on the look-out for anything that will help me with lower back pain while at the same time helping retain some flexibility and range of movement. I have had success with several therapies - in particularly "Rolfing" (check the AC archive for more info) but during a recent trip to the United States I learned about a new-but-not-quite-that-new treatment for lower back pain called the DRX9000.

I've always been wary of anything with a high-tech name and certainly the DRX9000 meets those criteria. But I suppose called the DRX9000 the "Amazing Lower Back pain Healing Machine" sounds even worse. At any rate, the DRX9000 has been around since 2001 and was created by the engineering team at Axiom Worldwide. It's a non-surgical, non-invasive procedure developed for the treatment of lower back pain and sciatica caused by herniations, disk bulges and degenerative disc disease.

In layman's terms it is supposed to be able to help people like me!

The treatment is based on the principal that decompressing the spine can increase the disk spaces thus creating suction inside the disk that can reduce disk herniations and bulges and also re-hydrate degenerated disks. A terrific 3d animated tutorial is available for viewing at www.discsdc.com.

As I was saying, I saw an ad for this treatment and I booked myself a visit for a free consultation. When you lie down on the table (see photo I) the DRX9000 starts working. A typical session lasts about 45 minutes. I wish I could say that you only need one treatment but for the DRX9000 to really work its magic -- a patient needs at least 20 treatments over a five to six week period (and a final price tag of about $5,000 dollars).

My treatment ended with my free consultation. But that doesn't take away from what I think is a viable alternative to other forms of treatment for lower back pain. Most of which are a lot more expensive.

Gary--great piece, and very succinct. I have a friend who did the consult, and he said it actually felt good! No pain at all. Thanks for the useful info--I'll be checking out the links.
