Life as a Fat Person

Why Do People Feel the Right to Judge Fat People?

In today's society people look down on the overweight. They see a fat person and assume that the person is lazy and eats far to much. They think that the overweight person spends half the day at the drive-thru and the rest spent laying in front of the television. If a person has never had to struggle with their weight, they don't understand the issues a fat person deals with on a daily basis. They don't understand how much pain is felt when someone makes a rude comment or laughs as they walk past. They have no understanding of the guilt that is felt with every bite of food consumed. What gives people the right to look down on fat people?

I am a fat person. I have been my whole life. I am always on a diet and watching what I eat. I exercise on a regular basis and I hardly ever eat out at a drive-thru. I lose weight by practically starving myself and then when I eat any type of normal food I gain it all back. When I am out grocery shopping or clothes shopping I see the glances and snares I get from other people. I hear the animal sounds that teenagers make as I pass by them.If I am out at a restaurant for dinner I see how people stare when the waitress asks for my order and I see the shock on their faces when I do not order the triple burger and fries like they thought. I do not spend my days pigging out on every greasy fattening piece of food i can get my hands on.

Everyone is so sure fat people are ruining our world. They insist we are costing them so much more for health care. While being overweight can contribute to other problems ,there are lots of fat people that are healthy. Why is it that you have to be a size 2 to be considered normal and healthy? I go into a store to buy some new clothes and if I need to ask for help I get dirty looks and I am made to feel like I should not be there. Like I should be wearing moo-moos instead of something fashionable. Fashion companies have come along way of making stylish clothing for bigger people and why should we be made to feel guilty for wearing them.

Just becuase a person is fat does not mean they spend their day eating junk food.

Takeaways
  • Fat people should not be made to feel like a second class citizen.
  • Don't judge a person based on outer appearances.
  • All fat people are not lazy and overeaters.
Did You Know?
Fat people have feelings too, and should not be judged and criticized for their size.

This is another great article! The more fat people speak out, the less preconceived notions that others will have about us. Sadly, there seems to be a loss of balance in the US about what it means to be fat. You turn on the television and see endless diet commercials, people having weight-loss surgery and celebrated on shows like The Biggest Loser. However, where are the fat people who are fit and fat or the ones who are simply exercising and eating right to be healthy and not necessarily weight-loss. Why don't we see fat women on television going out on dates or fat guys winning leg races? Discrimination against fat people is the last acceptable form of discrimination in the U.S. Why? Because anyone of any race can be fat, although if you read Paul Campos' The Obesity Myth, you'll see that the discrimination is primarily directed toward minorities. Please continue to write and let your voice out. Don't be ashamed of who you are! People who write negative comments do s

This is another fantastic article. I have spoken out about the fat hysteria, only to find everything that I wrote after I left graduate school to be blocked by the search engines. I would suggest that you read junkfoodscience.blogspot.com for more information on how you can be fit and fat, something that the media refuses to acknowledge. As a fat woman myself, I never thought about being fat until all of this hysteria began but I believe that God put us in these bodies to have compassion and to recognize and celebrate our differences. Sadly, I see the US moving towards subtle fascism that threatens to imprison and endanger us. Please continue to write and let your voice be heard.

Wow, you've had some really mature folks comment on your article. Maybe mine will be next...and my fat behind will get paid for them reading my article. haha Joke's on them. People like the ones who left these comments below mine are the reason that Virginia Tech, Columbine and all the other school killings happen--hell. crimes in general. People treat eachother like dog s*** then are shocked when Cho shows up and shoots them in the head. Kids are cruel, and it takes a real strength and great people around you to rise above. I hope you are as lucky as i am in having those things. -Fatty Patty

Read my article on "How I lost 50 lbs." Unless you have a medical condition, Fat is something that can be controlled. I really have to work to keep my weight off and it's not easy. Good luck.

Great article! Honey, go see your doctor and have your thyroid checked. It sounds like you have a medical problem by what you described. Also try reading Wendy Shanker's book "The Fat Girl's Guide To Life". You will thank me and Wendy later. It helps in dealing with your topic the assertive way. And if you're feeling adventurous read my article on how I lost 67 lbs. and have kept it off for over 2 years now. No tricks or gimmicks I promise - just common sense. Good Luck!

Nice article. I am a weird fat guy but I don't hear animal noises from teens. If I did they better hope my own teen kids don't hear it, they would beat them down.

I don't think it's right for a person to look down on anybody. When I was younger I went through a chubby stage and some kids made fun of me. I wasn't overweight but it was enough to change the way my classmates treated me. I believe that part of the reason why kids have low self esteem is because of being picked on for being different or having a learning disability. We should never judge somebody else because we don't know what their life is like at home. I had some problems when I was younger because I was abused at the age of 4 and it had a traumatic impact on my life. Every situation is different but all people deserve to be treated right. We need to look at the big picture instead of always looking at the way a person looks.

I agree with you on this article. There should be a course on manners taught to people because they just don't care how a person feels inside while they are making fun of what's on the outside. Just as much as they laugh at a person's weight, at the same time, they are subjecting themselves to be open to the same thing when they get old enough to have to slow down in life also. People need to remember that what goes around has a tendency to come around twice as hard. The weight may be what I am self-conscience about but your under belly will be exposed at some time and when you get teased and laughed at, hopefully, you will think of me...that fat lady waddling down the street or whatever other comments have been said. You would be amazed at the things I have heard.

Great article, I can totally relate, unless I watch what I eat, and exercise regularly, I easily pack on the pounds.

Awesome! I think we need to see more articles like this, to let everyone know there are many different kinds of people, but still people nonetheless.
