It's an age old controversy between experts on whether it is good or bad for a baby to use a pacifier. The general consensus seems to shift back and forth quite a bit. Some parents are completely against it, some completely for it. If you're unsure on where you stand on the subject, there are a few bits of information that you may want to consider before introducing the pacifier to your baby.

If breast-feeding, experts recommend waiting at least 4 to 6 weeks before offering a soother. When nursing, it's important to establish a good milk supply and to make sure your baby has no latch problems before trying to introduce a pacifier. Less sucking at your breast means less milk production. A pacifier can also cause nipple confusion. Like a bottle, a pacifier simply requires a lot less effort from your baby. The sucking and tongue motions are completely different. If you give your newborn a pacifier too early, you may find he's trying to use the same "lazy" sucking techniques at your breast that he does with his pacifier. It can lead to painful breastfeeding sessions for mom and can be frustrating to both her and baby.

If you decide not to breast-feed or have already established good breast-feeding sessions, a pacifier might be right for your baby. You may find that you have a baby that constantly wants to suckle and don't always want to offer a bottle or your breast as a pacifier. If this is the case, you may want to consider offering your baby a soother. Not only does sucking make your baby feel good but it also is said to produce chemicals in your baby's brain which reduces stress. There are also some studies which show that babies who use pacifiers have a lower risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.
