Secretary of State Rumors Surround Hillary Clinton

After Hillary Clinton's defeat to Barack Obama, her supporters were hoping for at least a vice presidential nomination. When Clinton didn't get one and Sarah Palin did, countless pundits feared that Clinton's supporters would cost Obama the election out of revenge. Now that such a situation didn't happen, many are wondering what Clinton's role in the new Democratic party is. If rumors are to be believed, Obama may have found such a place for her.

Rumors are swirling around that Hillary Clinton is the front runner to be Obama's Secretary of State. There was recent confirmed by the Huffington Post that Clinton and Obama met together in Chicago, possibly to discuss a Clinton role in the Obama administration. More Obama advisors told NBC News that Clinton is a secretary of state candidate.

The U.S. Secretary of State is the fourth in line for succession of the Presidency. Besides that, a Secretary of State's major role is to head the cabinet, negotiate with representatives of foreign nations, coordinate oversees activities of the government, and advise the President on foreign policy.

Condoleezza Rice was appointed as secretary of state in President Bush's second term. Previous secretaries of state include Colin Powell, Madeline Albright, Warren Christopher, James Baker and Henry Kissinger.

Putting Clinton as his secretary of state would be Obama's biggest move in his transition to the Presidency. After all the fears people had that both Hillary and Bill Clinton would undermine Obama's candidacy, making Clinton a major player in the administration would be seen as a final act of unity.

Or it could be seen as a stunt to ensure there will be no more interference from the Clinton camp.

Talks about whether Clinton is being seriously considered is widely ranging. A Clinton source told CNN that Obama's team has not approached her, while other sources tell ABC News that talks about her are "very serious." No details have come out on the exact nature of Clinton and Obama's meeting in Chicago yesterday to support either position.
