Nutritional experts are sending out warnings that crash dieting can lead to weight gain rather than weight loss. At this time of year when resolutions are being made about weight loss it is highly important that you realize that your body can actually cause you to gain weight if you suddenly put it under pressure by crash dieting. Some of the new diet fads include only eating grapefruit, only eating popcorn or buying a liquid meal replacement in order to lose weight. The reality is that these things make you fatter, because they lower your metabolism which leads to weight gain in the long term.
These fad diets are nutritionally unbalanced and can lack vitally important calcium or iron which can lead to Osteoporosis. Many programmes have shown Hollywood Stars diet fads and the long-term effect it can have on their bodies such as premature ageing, Osterporosis, brittle bones and a shorter lifespan. Yo-Yo dieting has become extremely popular over the past few years and this can lead to eating disorders such as bulimia and anorexia nervosa.
The age of dieters is also a great worry to many in the medical profession today with some children as young as ten coming in for eating disorder treatments. Yo-Yo dieting will make you lose weight quickly initally however once you start eating normally again, you will put back on the weight you lost and may even gain extra weight in the process.
Healthy eating and general exercise is the right route to dieting and consulting your GP who can input a eating plan which takes into account your metabolism and general health is highly recommended. Remember, there is absolutely no point in making a mad dash into weight loss as the correct way to lose weight and keep it off is to slightly alter your lifestyle, learn to eat the correct foods with the best nutritional content, eat the right portions for your body size and take regular exercise.
