As content is king on the Internet, it is vitally important to be found. With billions, yes billions, of sites on the web, you have to know how to navigate the world of SEO (search engine optimization).

What is Search Engine Optimization

In layman's terms, it is content that is searchable by key words. For example, if you want to search for a recipe on Apple Pie, you'd probably go to Google and type in "Apple Pie" and "Recipe". Then, you'd start clicking on the 1,020,000 results that popped up (I checked).

BUT, what if, for some reason, you typed in the term "Pie made of apple"? This is not search engine friendly. Only nine results are returned. So, it's important to write your content in a way that it can be easily found by surfers who are looking for what you're writing about. But, I hate it, for the following reasons:

1. Keyword Rich Articles Sound Dumb & Unnatural: In order to get the right density, you usually have to write some unnatural sounding sentences. Most sites like for you to have a keyword density of around 2-3%. In a 400, 500 or 600 word article, that's no easy feat.

2. Keyword Rich Articles Take Too Long to Write: By the time you run your piece through one of those keyword rich analyzers trying to get the right density, you could have written another article. FYI, I use the tool at the following link when I'm trying to be a good girl and "optimize": http://www.123promotion.co.uk/tools/keywordanalysis.php,

By the time you spend your time trying to get a dollar or two more per article by optimizing it, you could have written another one and submitted it.

Even at the lowest offer of $3, I think the time is better spent churning out well-written content. Only you can be the judge of if it's worth it for you. Because I'm a writer, I'd much rather spend my time writing than optimizing.

NOTE: To be fair, optimized articles are easier to find on the web, which means that you potentially have more page views. More page views make you more popular and, in the case of Associated Content, garners you higher offers.

In other cases, it means more traffic for your website.

Thanks Joyce, PH, Timothy, Veronika (interesting spelling of your name; never saw it spelled like this) and Jamie. I'm waiting for the day that Google creates a program that reads my mind. That way, keyword rich or not, I can just press really hard on my forehead and have the thoughts pour out. How about "thought optimization" Google? Are you listening?!

Another good read Yuwanda. For the most part I wholeheartedly agree-minus the guys part-lol Then, too, with practice comes ease. But for me ti depends if I want to concentrate on KWD or not-ususally not.

I am really, really lucky that I write keyword-rich naturally. My main tricks to keep it both fun and simple: use frequent headers with the keyword in them; and look through the first paragraph to find at least one more place I can insert the keyword, doing the same with the last paragraph. What not to do: keyword-cram. Way too many people doing that now. This works for me; I have one article that I didn't even try to optimize that ranks #3 on Google for its phrase. Yuwanda, you are always fun to read. Thank you.

Great piece! I agree with you Yuwanda, and I feel that at times it sounds to forced.

I hate trying to determine if the density is enough. I've just started writing and hoping to see what happens with the offers. LOL Great article!

However, when your talking keyword density your only talking one keyword or phrase. Proper keyword insertion in a 500-600 page article is about 3-4 keyword references. You can still write effective articles when you only have to insert your keyword about 3 times. If you have a topic which draws a lot of interest you will have quite a few page views.

Hello Newman. Is that a full name or a writing moniker? Either way, extremely interesting. I love your motto, "Life is too short to do laundry." Hilarious! Hey, do you know my fiance? :-)

I agree with you - especially point #1. Such is life writing online content, sad to say.
