The Australian Cattle Dog: A Unique Breed Of Dog

What to Consider when Looking to Purchase an Australian Cattle Dog for the Family

The Australian Cattle Dog is not only a unique breed of dog but also an extremely desirable household pet. Since there is much controversy over what breeds actually make up the Australian Cattle Dog
it would behoove the potential buyer to read the writings of Mr. Robert Kaleski. However, what almost all owners and breeders of the Australian Cattle Dogs agree on is that the breed is native to Australia. They will also agree that these magnificent dogs were bred for herding cattle in the Australian outback. The Australian Cattle Dog is also called a Red Heeler, Queensland Heeler and Blue Heeler. While researching you may wish to look under these breed categories also.

In general, training is an important aspect to a family when looking to purchase a dog to join their family. The Australian Cattle Dog is extremely intelligent and easily trained in both obedience and herding thus making it a perfect addition to most households. It is however, necessary for the potential owners to remember that the Cattle Dog is extremely active and has a high level of stamina.

The ideal home and owner for an Australian Cattle Dog would be a household that has a large area for the dog to exercise on a daily basis. The Australian Cattle Dog is not a dog suited for apartment dwellers unless the owner has enough time for daily exercise of their pet.

This bred of dog is normally very healthy with a natural life expectancy of 12 to 15 years and with proper nutrition and health care even longer than that. There are only a small number of anomalies the purchaser needs to be aware of when looking at purchasing the Australian Cattle Dog. Dysplasia, juvenile cataracts, and occasional deafness can be passed from parent to pup. It is always best that a potential purchaser require a certificate of health from a veterinarian when considering making a purchase of any new puppy.

They are an interesting breed from what I have read here and elsewhere. I've never seen one in person except back some years ago when they were showing up a lot in pet stores, from what I remember.

You know I love tis article. I grew up with many of these little fellas. They are so smart, and easy to train, but not always recommended for families with small children. ( the Blue Heelers in particular) Thanks:)

Great article. I saw one in a dog show on TV recently, and I thought he was adorable! So much personality.

I love the looks of the Cattle Dog but have only met one myself. He growled, snapped, and dragged his owner into my yard every day, trying to go after anyone in the yard! I think he was the exception, rather than the rule. I hope!

Wasn't familiar with this dog. Did you get this idea from the Thornbirds? :)
