Avoid Problems Crate Training Your Dog or Puppy with Some Simply Tips

If you're having problems crate training your dog don't worry, here are a few simple steps you can take to get back on the right track in no time. Crate training is a great way to give a dog a place to escape, to hang out in, or spend their time out of trouble when you're away from home.

The biggest tip I can give is to start your dog young. Crate training, like any type of animal training, is easiest when your pet is young. If your dog's not a puppy anymore and already an adult an easy step you can take is to take off the
top of the crate; this allows the dog to feel comfortable in the area but not trapped inside and is a great place to start. After a month or two you should be able put the top back on and the dog won't whine because it's used to its new space.

Remember to also make the crate comfortable for your pet. Make sure there's some dry warm bedding, a blanket or small dog bed works best. If you leave your dog in all day it's good to provide a source of water and I have found a small bowl works well. If your dog continuously spills it try something like you'd use for hamster. You might also try freezing the water so that it will be licked slowly and by the time it's melted wall be consumed. Toys are great of course but if you use treats as well make sure that nothing can be choked on and that they will last a while.

The biggest thing you can do is make sure you use your crate as a 'happy place'. Don't crate the dog of a punishment or make your dog hate the crate and your dog will not associate the crate in a negative way.
