2008 are at an all-time high, affecting countless thousands with layoffs and subsequent fiscal tailspins.

The International Council of Shopping Centers released its October figures and revealed that "chain store sales fell 0.9 percent." As early as April of 2008 the Council noted an anticipated store closings increase by 25% over last year. In plain English this means that in 2008 there are about 5,770 store closings on the horizon. Mind you, these closings refer to chain stores, not the mom and pop shops or unique mall stores that are also closing their doors at alarming rates.

Store Closings 2008

Retail Info Systems News details the announced store closings - as of April, 2008 - that include 117 Ann Taylor stores, 150 Lane Bryant/Fashion Bug boutiques, 140 Foot Locker stores, 9 Macy's stores, 33 Pep Boys venues, 125 Sprint Nextel outlets, and 100 Zales storefronts.

Then came the bankruptcies. Friedman's Jewelers and its sister company Crescent Jewelers went bankrupt and were sold to Whitehall Jewelers, which went bankrupt in August, 2008. Mervyns, an anchor store of California shopping malls, closed its 176 stores and let go more than 20,000 employees. The Sharper Image lost about 2,500 workers and closed 186 stores.

Shoe Pavilion and Levitz Furniture, as outlined by Bloomberg, closed their doors as well. So did Circuit City when it turned off the lights in 150 stores. Dillards closed 6 stores, Disney let go of 98 stores, and Wickes Furniture locked up tight 38 stores.

I just want people to understand that.. with all these cuts, alot of employee hours have been cut in the stores that remain open... So please have patience with associates that have to do the job of 4 people.. We really want to help you but it is hard..and we dont want you to complain because we may lose our job because you didn't get waited on after 5 mins of walking in.

I work for a weekly newspaper in a small metro market. What I've seen over the past 15 years is that those large corporate retailers don't do much for their communities outside of providing a few jobs. They don't advertise and their prices are, well, let's just call it a gouge! They run Main Street, small mom & pops out of business. The corporate "chain" giants don't get involved with their communitiy. The money they bring in goes out of the community to feed salaries for corporate execs. Though I hate to see people lose their jobs, I for one, think this will be good for the prospective and future small business owner.

Well, we knew it was coming due to what hit in California. We are in Texas. We saved our money and paid off the house, cars and have no debt. Credit cards are the major problem and the next wave of problems. People just don't understand they can wait to get something when they have the money. Food and basic necessities should come first. Our society caused this. Don't blame greedy banks. Everyone needs to take responsibility for their own debt and problems. No one is going to help and it shouldn't be expected. Obama can't help anyone. The country is broke. His promises will fall flat as he made them knowing the country was broke. Dumb.
