Tips for Taking Care of Your Diamonds

Taking care of a diamond takes more than just having it cleaned periodically. While the old saying is "diamonds are forever," it's still possible to damage a diamond if you are not careful. When you learn how to properly care for your diamonds then you ensure that your diamond will last
if not forever, at the very least for years.

The first thing you should do is to take your diamonds to a jeweler once a year. This is so that he can check all the mountings and prongs to make sure that they don't need to be repaired. A mounting or prong that has damage can mean that you could lose the diamond in the setting and once it is lost, sometimes you are not able to find it again. So, rather than waiting for the mountings or prongs to degrade or get damaged, it's best to have them checked yearly.

When you are not wearing your diamonds you whether they are loose or set in jewelry, you should store them in a fabric lined case or in a jewelry box that has enough sections that each piece has its own home compartment. This will help to prevent your diamonds from getting scratched but it will also keep your diamond from scratching your other jewelry.

When cleaning your diamond it is necessary to be very careful. Diamonds can get coated with hand lotion, and other products that we have on our hands, and this can cause them to get a build up over time and to appear dull. The best way to clean your diamond is to soak it in a solution of warm water with a mild detergent such as Ivory liquid dishwashing soap. Be sure to either put your diamond in a strainer, or have the sink plugged before you put your diamond in the water, other wise you could lose your diamond down the drain.
