International Woman's Day has been celebrated since 1910 to commemorate March 8, 1856 when women in New York City took to the streets to demand demanding shorter hours, better pay and voting rights. International Woman' Day is a national holiday in many countries and while that is not the case in the United States, it is supported by the Government and there are celebrations in many parts of the country.The University of Minnesota, http://www.mnadvocates.org/Call_for_Co-Sponsorship2.html will be celebrating International Woman's Day for the 11th straight year. The event will take place on Saturday, March 3rd, 2007 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Coffman Memorial Union at the University of Minnesota. There will be panel discussions and workshops on a variety of human rights issues, film and performances and the admission is free and open to anyone.
In Portland Oregon, International Woman's Day will be celebrated in a very big way on March 4 at Portland State University campus, 1825 SW Broadway, Oregon, Portland
http://www.piwd.org There will be workshops such as "You're Never Too Old To Make A Change: A History of the Raging Grannies" and "World Religion Panel: Self Expression in Spiritual Life". There will be plenty of entertainment and all of the performers are women.
There will be a whole room with many health organizations such as Portland Women's Crisis Line, Planned Parenthood,
American Cancer Society, Unbroken Flow Acupuncture
and Partnership for Prescription Assistance .
There will also be a special children's section, an art gallery and plenty of vendors.
The International Visitors Center of Chicago, the International Trade Club of Chicago and the Union League Club of Chicago are going to be celebrating International Woman's DayMarch 8, 2007 at
