When a first time mother brings home their baby, it is expected that they will be overwhelmed for the first couple months. Baby books do not come close to preparing us the for the lack of sleep and crying fits that go on for no reason. During the baby shower most mom's will receive most of what they need and probably to much of what they don't. So what do you give that new mother that has everything? Nothing! Instead, you should do something for them. No babysitting offers. A new mother is not going to want to part from their newborn for awhile. While babysitting is a very gracious offer, however, it does not do much for them at this moment. Try a few of these things that you can do to help take the stress away from a new mother and give them a little break. These are also good for new dad's to do for their baby's mother.

A nap- Offer to come over and watch the baby while the new mom takes a nap. This keeps the newborn close by while giving the mom a much needed nap. Even an a small uninterrupted nap can make you feel like you slept all night. Also, if you happen to be staying the night, try offering to wake up in the night with the baby for half or all of the night. Only offer to do this if you are sure you will wake up after only a few cries. Mother's will wake up at the first sound of the baby and they are not going to stay in bed while the baby is crying.

Clean- Offer to tidy up the house and do some odd jobs around the house. Since the new mom is still recovering from giving birth and taking care of a newborn, knowing that the house is clean will take a lot of stress off of her. If the house is clean, offer to do some organizing or see if she need anything for the baby or the house.

Shower or Bath- Give the new mom the luxury of taking an uninterrupted shower or bath. These become a luxury once you have a child. Try bringing some spa products or a massaging shower head to make it even more relaxing. Also, put on some relaxing music to cover up the noises outside the bathroom.

Takeaways
  • If you buy more things than the parents need, it just creates stressful clutter.
  • They are not going to want you to babysit for awhile, no matter how much you want to.
  • Any help is helpful!

How nice! I wish I had some of those gifts when I first had my daughters! Thanks for the suggestions if I need them in the future.
