When most folks think of the Dominican Republic, they think of beautiful beaches and baseball players. While it's certainly true that many of the major league's best baseball players have come from the tiny island and that the island definitely has some incredible beaches, there's much more to the Dominican Republic than that. Most travelers head to the Dominican Republic because they want a little something different out of their Caribbean experience. Specifically, folks head to the Dominican Republic to get a taste of the culture that seems to radiate from the island.

Once on the island, you'll understand what all of the fuss is about. This is one place that still hasn't been completely transformed by the hand of global tourism. It remains a cheap place to visit and the people extend a warm welcome to all travelers. While some nations might say the right things, folks visiting the Dominican Republic truly get the feeling that the locals want you there. Since this nation is not tremendously developed yet, the best places to go are still the beautiful beaches.

One of the selling points for this gorgeous destination is that the island features the Caribbean's longest unstopped stretch of white sand beach. Punta-Cana Bavaro, as it's known by the locals, is known as a long, beautiful stretch where the public can seek refuge. One of the charming things about this nation is that all of its beaches are open to the public.

Playa Bahoruco is one of the most popular beaches in the country. It stands as the perfect stretch of untouched Caribbean land. With gorgeous rock coves on either side of the long stretch of sand, it's both gorgeous and functional. If you want to go swimming here, take some swimming shoes because it can be rocky. You'll want to watch out for extremely strong undercurrents, which can be dangerous for younger or weaker swimmers.
