There are endless numbers of people who claim that they don't understand why they are overweight or even obese because they don't eat very much. Other people will roll their eyes at this comment, assuming that this person is either in denial or outright lying about their food consumption. How could someone be obese when they only eat one meal a day?

I am one of these people. On most days I will eat either nothing all day or sometimes a granola bar. Either Diet Coke or iced tea accompanies this. Dinner comes in around 6 pm and is a standard meal, nothing outrageous in calories or fat. Occasionally, I will have something salty or sweet for dessert. However, the calories simply do not add up to explain why I am so overweight. I am not alone in this.

We have heard it before that if you don't eat often, your body will go into starvation mode. However, the majority of people apply this to anorexics. No, it is true of overweight people as well. Really, that bowl of ice cream is going to go straight to my hips because my body is going to save it for energy because it doesn't know when it will get fed next. This ultimately slows down the metabolism. It is possible to eat minimal calories on any given day and gain weight.

There is a solution. The body and metabolism can be retrained. Many health professionals suggest eating five to six small meals every day to keep the metabolism active. This will also kick start the sluggish metabolism of those who do not eat enough. Once an overweight person begins to eat more and eat regularly, they must make the right food choices. Eating several meals a day doesn't mean eating an entire meal, but consists of much smaller portions. It can take weeks for the metabolism to speed up, so results will not be immediate. This is especially true if the body has been in starvation mode for a considerable length of time.

I have this problem too. I tend to go several days without really eating. I might have a bite of this or that once or twice a day but that's not really eating. I ended up gaining some weight because of it. I try to eat at least once a day now but I don't always manage it. damn this getting older crap! lol

There is a great deal of scientific evidence supporting this. You should update the story with some references.

This is all bullshit, it sounds like the dumbest thing I've ever heard. You want to loose weight, take the GD sandwich out of your mouth. Starvation cycles: nonsense! If you are really serious about loosing weight, come and be my prisoner - I'll LOCK you up and feed you how much and when I want - you will be caged like an animal, but at least you won't look like a pig beast when we're done!!!

Amen sister! It is about time this was written about, and so true!

You're totaly right, Heather. It always drives me crazy when people say things like 'I'm trying to lose weight; I just eat one meal at night.' I have a friend who's doing this now and I can't seem to make her understand that she's sabotaging herself!

great job and very true.

If you are trying to loss weight, it's important to vary your calorie count each day. This tricks your body from going into starvation mode. 1,000 one day, 1,200 the next and throw in an 800 once a week. Graze five small meals a day and don't skip breakfast! If you have to, drink breakfast in the form of shake like Slim-fast. And write down everything you put in your mouth.

So true - I've been fat without eating much at all - and thin while eating frequently in great quantities. The secret is in the metabolism. Thanks for the education and substantiating all that I suspected.

I can understand how an individual can not eat and not lose weight, but to gain 10, 20, or 50 pounds not eating seems a little hard to absorb unless the level of physical activity was extremely low. I used to be able to eat an incredible amount of food and not lose weight, although I'd feel sick from binging. Now, luckily I've outgrown my huge appetite, or I would probably be oveweight or obese.

This is undeniably true. When I was doing the Somersize program and eating properly and regularly, I was eating more and melting off pounds. Now, I barely eat anything and I don't lose a pound.

I guess that saying "moderation in all things" applies to eating, too. Now if only I could actually follow it! You make some good points.

You're preaching to the choir, girl. I agree with your article because I have lived it. My appetite has changed, particularly since I entered peri-menopause and I don't always feel like eating. I figured that it would at least translate into a weight loss, but not eating has had the exact result you described. I did see some celebrity interview not too long ago, where a rail- thin actress complained that she never gains weight, no matter how much she eats or doesn't eat and I just wanted to throw a very large object at her.

Good article, Heather. "Grazing," or eating five or six small helthy meals is healthier than not eating or eating only one meal day.

Yes, I know this is supposed to be true. Thanks.
