Flyertown is one of those little "undiscovered" gems of neat places to visit. Whether you are a model railroad enthusiast or just want a fun place to take the kids and watch their jaws drop in awe, Flyertown Toy Train Museum and Operating Model Railroad is where you need to take the kids this weekend!
If you know anything about model trains, you'll remember the name "American Flyer". Lionel, Marks and American Flyer were among the most popular manufacturers of electric scale model trains. You probably had a set of trains as a child. Flyertown owner Joe Jones has designed and built a museum with a theme based on American Flyer trains, and the museum includes a huge operating model train layout, the largest "S" gauge model railroad layout in Southern New Jersey.
The museum's operating model railroad rivals those similar tourist attractions in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, a noted area for enthusiasts of real trains, scale model trains, railroad memorabilia and retail train hobby shops. Flyertown Toy Train Museum has even been spotlighted in a national model railroading magazine.
The Flyertown layout uses all "S" gauge trains, which are not quite as big as the old three-rail track "O" gauge Lionel trains, but larger than the popular "HO" scale, and very realistic in appearance. Seven trains can run simultaneously on the museum's multi-level tracks, and over 100 complete train sets line the walls, waiting their turn to run. Many antique locomotive and trains cars are on display, too.
Flyertown also has a retail store attached, selling garden trains, "S", "O" and "HO" trains, accessories and model buildings. They have starter sets and Thomas The Train gift items for the young train lover. Check out their ship models and Titanic memorabilia!
