Marine General Jim Jones in Line as Obama's National Security Advisor

One of the most intriguing stories to emerge from the Barack Obama transition is the possibility that retired Marine General Jim Jones may be selected to be Barack Obama's National Security Advisor. It is a selection bound to enrage many liberals supporters of Obama.

General Jim Jones forty year career in the Marine Corps included tours in Vietnam, Iraq, and the Balkans. Jim Jones is a graduate of the National War College. His career as a Marine culminated in an assignment as Commandant of the Marines, followed by Supreme Allied Commander Europe, the first Marine General to hold that post.

Jim Jones has some experience in a variety of diplomatic assignments as well. General Jim Jones served as the Chairman of the Independent Commission on the Security Forces of Iraq. General Jim Jones has most recently been special envoy for Middle East Security. Jim Jones has been offered or considered for jobs ranging from commanding General of Central Command, Deputy Secretary of State, and even Barack Obama's Vice Presidential running mate.

General Jim Jones effectively killed the possibility of an Obama/Jones ticket by appearing with John McCain at an energy related event during the recent Presidential campaign.

If Barack Obama selects Jim Jones as his National Security Advisor, and if General Jones accepts the position, it will signal an Obama national security policy at variance with that articulated by Barack Obama during the campaign. With Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State, Robert Gates being retained as Secretary of Defense, and now General Jim Jones as National Security Advisor, Barack Obama will have surrounded himself with national security advisors who either support or supported at one time the War in Iraq. The centerpiece of Barack Obama's campaign had been opposition to the War in Iraq and a promise for an immediate withdraw from that country.
