2008 was full of amazing sports stories and this list is but a scratch at the surface of a few of the best. This list in no way intends to cover all of the greatest sports stories of the 2008 sports year - but it does try and capture some of the lesser known - or lesser mainstream -
stories, that are worhty of a spot in a list of the top sports stories of 2008.
Kevin Everett, Buffalo Bills, NFL
On September 9, 2007, Kevin Everett suffered one of the worst injuries in recent NFL history - a fracture and dislocation of his cervical spine. Many categorized the injury as "life threatening" and most said he would never walk again. Everett has since proved everyone wrong and is gaining more strength with each passing day. In a true class act, the Buffalo Bills did not immediately waive Everett - keeping him on the active roster to finish the season - so he could fulfill the requirement of three full NFL seasons and be eligible for a full NFL pension. Everett was awarded the "Jimmy V Award for Perseverance" on July 20, 2008 during the 2008 ESPY award ceremony.
New York Giants Defeat Undefeated England Patriots">New England Patriots in Super Bowl
In the most dramatic fashion imaginable - and quite possibly the greatest Super Bowl upset ever - Eli Manning and the New York Giants squashed the England Patriots">New England Patriots bid for and undefeated season. For the Patriots, just reaching the Super Bowl undefeated was not without controversy. As "Spygate" began to wind its tale, some felt that if the Patriots were to win the game - it would forever have the infamous "asterisk" attached to it anyway. The New York Giants, however, had plans of their own - "win and there will be now controversy". In a game that included arguably the greatest catch ever made in the Super Bowl and a last chance game winning TD drive; it could be several years before there is a Super Bowl that can live up this one.
